Fitted wardrobes across SW9: what to expect
We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. Doors and panels are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth and scribing them to the walls and ceiling. Typical reasons to get in touch are wardrobes that are full to bursting and standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You get in touch and tell us about the bedroom, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
- At the design visit, we measure up and plan the doors and the inside with you. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
- You receive a quote in writing setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
- We fit them in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.
What goes into your quote
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

How to get a quote
To make a start, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Bedroom storage across SW9
Across SW9, bedrooms range from period rooms with high ceilings to compact rooms in newer blocks. Fitted wardrobes are drawn up to suit the room you actually have, with the inside laid out around what you keep.
Homes built before 1919 make up about 35% of the housing in the SW9 postcode district, with about 22% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. About 20% of households in SW9 live in flats in converted or shared houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls. About 62% of households in the SW9 postcode district live in purpose-built flats, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
Our area covers the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City, SW9 included. Wherever you are, the job starts with a design visit.
Stockwell: Near listed buildings like Stockwell Green United Reformed Church, less than half a mile south-east of the centre of Stockwell, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your home is one of the older houses near St. Andrew's, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Under a sloping ceiling, standard wardrobes leave most of the space unused. A fitted wardrobe can be shaped to the ceiling line, with hanging where it’s tall and drawers or shelves where it is low.
What to check before you book
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Have they thought about parking near you?
Flats, blocks and rented homes
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
Boards, parts and paint
Spray-painted finish
Spraying coats edges and corners evenly for a smooth finish. The colour is agreed at the design stage.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish often suits wardrobes in older houses. The colour is agreed with you, and it is easy to refresh in future.
Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in SW9
Some bedrooms are hard to furnish. Slopes, chimney breasts, low windows and doors in tricky spots leave standard wardrobes with nowhere to go. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.
We’re often asked to help with:
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
- A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
- A bedroom that never feels tidy
- Not enough hanging space
When is bespoke worth it?
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
Questions we’re often asked
How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?
The wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors. That’s why we measure the route, not just the room. If you are in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to walls.
How do I get started?
It’s easiest to message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?
You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included, in the proportions you need. We talk it through at the design visit.
Do you cover areas outside London?
No. Our work is in London only: every London borough and the City of London.
Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?
It depends on the room. Hinged doors give full access but need clear space in front. We talk through both during the design visit.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.
Do photos help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.
