What affects the price in Enfield Chase

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Parking near your home

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Before the design visit

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Approximate measurements of the space

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, use our contact form with a few details about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

About our built-in bookshelves in Enfield Chase

We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives smooth panels that paint well, and birch plywood gives strong shelves. You can have a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in a colour agreed with you. We work across London, including Enfield Chase. People normally come to us about low shelves children can reach and room for a record collection, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, living rooms can be very different from one street to the next. Some have alcoves either side of a chimney breast, some a bay window, and some neither. Built-in bookshelves are designed for the room in Enfield Chase that you have, with shelves sized so they don’t sag.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. Either way, the day is planned at the measuring visit. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

Before we arrive

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

Cupboard doors in MDF stay flat and paint well. It has no grain to show through.

Hand-painted finish

With hand painting, you see the colour in the room’s own light. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Enfield Chase homes and built-in bookshelves

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Enfield Chase were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 27%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Enfield Chase include Church of St Mary Magdalene (Grade II*), under half a mile south, and Clarendon Cottage (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles east. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. A quarter or more of the homes in the streets around Enfield Chase (about 27%) were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Rooms from that era are often squarer, with fewer alcoves and sometimes no chimney breast, so a full wall of built-in bookshelves is often the answer, fixed to suit the wall, which may be concrete or block.

Living in a block of flats near Enfield Chase station? Then it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For a family home near Chase Side Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If you live near Enfield Town Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Enfield Chase

Is Enfield Chase in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes. Enfield Chase is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Enfield and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Enfield Chase?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?

That depends on how the wall is built. Fixings are chosen for the wall type into sound structure. Where a wall cannot take the load, we’ll say so and suggest another approach.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.

How much will my built-in bookcase cost?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. You will get a quote in writing once we’ve measured up.
