How we make loft storage for Enfield Chase

A dormer can take shelves, a desk or a window seat. Their sides are often angled, and their walls rarely straight. Each piece is scribed to the dormer. It adds storage without taking up the main floor. We will go through the options in Enfield Chase. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are needing storage in a loft office and a boarded loft with no proper shelving.

Wherever your home in Enfield Chase sits in London’s mix of housing, there’s often a corner or recess not doing much. Fitted storage can make it useful, with drawers, shelves, hanging or a seat depending on the space. Walls could be brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so we check before choosing fixings.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What happens on fitting day

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Before fitting day, we check the route in as well as the room, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.

  1. It starts with a few details from you.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design and finish.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and sprayed there if you chose a spray finish.
  5. The storage is fitted and scribed to the slopes, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Go easy on new paintwork while it cures; hand-painted surfaces are easy to touch up later.

Advice

Common questions about loft storage

Can you make loft storage for a home in Enfield Chase?

Yes, Enfield Chase is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Enfield and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you build a wardrobe under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers lower down. It makes the most of the space. We’ll work out the layout when we visit.

Will eaves storage block the ventilation?

Not when it’s planned well. We look behind the knee wall during the design visit and plan the storage so air can still move. Insulation and ventilation work itself is not ours.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Which materials go into your loft storage?

Our loft storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Both are stable, which matters in a loft room. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Why people ask for loft storage in Enfield Chase

Loft rooms that double as offices or guest rooms need places for things. Built-in storage under the slopes keeps the room flexible.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • A loft room with too many jobs
  • A loft room that still feels unfinished
  • Boxes and suitcases with no home
  • A boarded loft with no proper shelving

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mary Magdalene, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work

Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Note the things that need a home in the loft
  • Think about hanging space for a loft bedroom
  • Choose a calm colour for the loft
  • Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall

We open each door and run each drawer with you before we go. If there’s an access door to the eaves, we make sure it opens fully. That way, everything works as planned.

Temperatures in a loft room can swing more than elsewhere. Keep the room ventilated. It helps the storage stay in good condition.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

How we price loft storage

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • How many doors and drawers there are

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Helping us understand the room

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.
