Alcove units in Enfield Island Village
About our alcove units in Enfield Island Village
Period alcoves are rarely square. Walls bow, corners wander and floors slope. Each unit is made in our workshop to our measurements and scribed to the walls when we fit it, so the sides meet the wall closely rather than showing a dark line. Adjustable feet or a plinth set it level. If your home has bowed walls and sloping floors and shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess, that is what alcove units are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Open-plan living is usual in homes built since 2000, and many homes around Enfield Island Village were built in that time. In a room like that, alcove units can help separate the sitting area from the kitchen. Finished floors in newer homes mark easily, so they’re covered while we work.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the alcove unit designed for your room, what it is made from and how it’s finished.

What we do not do
Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Decorating the rest of the room
- Removing or altering a chimney breast, which is structural work
- New sockets or wiring (your electrician handles those)
Not sure whether your space suits alcove units? You can use our contact form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

What happens on fitting day
In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.
- You contact us with a short note about the room and the units you have in mind.
- At the design visit, we measure each alcove and go through the layout with you, noting the skirting, picture rail and any chimney vent.
- We send a written quote for the units, for you to read through at your own pace.
- We make the cupboards and shelves in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted finish or for hand painting on site.
- We fit them in your home, scribing them to the walls. Then we go through the doors and shelves with you.
How to prepare
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Questions we’re often asked
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Enfield Island Village?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.
Will a conservation area stop me having alcove units fitted in Enfield Island Village?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them, use our contact form.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
How tall should alcove units be?
That’s your choice. Some people take the units right to the ceiling for the most storage, while a low cupboard with shelves above keeps the room feeling lighter. We talk through the options during the design visit.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
What prompts alcove units in Enfield Island Village
Often the alcoves are simply the biggest unused space in the room. Off-the-shelf furniture rarely fits them, leaving gaps at the sides and above. Built-in units use the whole recess.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- Space for a growing book collection
- Old alcove cupboards that have seen better days
- Bare alcoves beside the fireplace
- Storage that suits a period room
If your home is one of the older houses near Ss Peter and Paul Church, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
Flats, leases and landlords
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls during the design visit.

Why bespoke in Enfield Island Village?
In fairness, standalone furniture comes with you when you move. Fitted alcove units stay with the house and remain when you move on. Which suits you depends on your plans. In a compact new-build room, standard sizes rarely fit the walls exactly, and fitted furniture uses that space. It works around service boxing too.
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.
