Alcove units in Enfield Highway, Enfield

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make alcove units for homes in Enfield Highway, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Worn or badly fitted alcove units
  • Clutter with nowhere to go
  • Bare alcoves beside the fireplace

Alcove units designed for your room

About our alcove units in Enfield Highway

Most Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses have a chimney breast in the main rooms, with an alcove on each side. Built-in alcove units put that space to work as cupboards and shelving that sit as part of the room. If your home in Enfield Highway has alcoves like these, each alcove gets a unit designed for it. If you’re living with somewhere to keep books and records and walls too uneven for standard furniture, alcove units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

A house from between the wars normally has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, so alcove units are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Enfield Highway, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

When you need someone else

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Removing or altering a chimney breast, which is structural work
  • New sockets or wiring (your electrician handles those)
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Scribed side panels
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Adjustable shelves

Your questions about alcove units in Enfield Highway

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Enfield Highway?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and a written quote follows.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

What materials do you use?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes, and the quote says which is used where.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

How fitting day works

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch to say you’d like alcove units, with a note of the room they’re in.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure up and agree the layout with you.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing, ready for you to check.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The units are fitted in your home, ready to fill. Any scribing to the walls is done on the day.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Advice

Living-room carpentry in Enfield Highway: local notes

About 55% of the homes in the streets around Enfield Highway went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 16% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Enfield Highway is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. About 55% of homes in the neighbourhood around Enfield Highway date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Interwar front rooms normally have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, and alcove units are planned around both.

The wider area includes historic houses like Forty Hall, about 1.3 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live in a flat close to Brimsdown station, alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Gunpowder Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Enfield Highway is part of the London Borough of Enfield, about 3 miles south of Edmonton. We cover Enfield Highway as part of our work across Enfield. We list Enfield Highway among 26 places we cover in Enfield.

In EN3 and EN1, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. If your home is on a street such as Hoe Lane, Old Road and East Road, or close by, we can visit to measure up for alcove units. If you are just outside Enfield Highway, we also cover Brimsdown (1 mile east), Enfield Lock (1 mile north-east) and Forty Hill (1 mile west). Elsewhere in Enfield, we also cover Edmonton (3 miles south), Enfield (2 miles west), Palmers Green (4 miles south-west), New Southgate (5 miles south-west), Enfield Chase (2 miles west) and Bush Hill Park (2 miles south-west).

Local landmarks in Enfield Highway

Around Enfield Highway, we cover homes near Aylward Academy, Russet House School and The White Horse Public House, among other places. How we price alcove units

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How square the room is

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Getting in touch

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • How you want to use the space

To get a quote for alcove units in Enfield Highway, message us from the contact page. Tell us which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, plus any rough sizes. We’ll arrange a design visit, then send a quote in writing.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf units come in the colours the maker chose. We paint ours in the colour you pick, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site. You can match the walls or choose a contrast. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
