Alcove units in Finsbury Park, Haringey

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make alcove units for homes in Finsbury Park, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess
  • Room to work in an alcove
  • Bare alcoves beside the fireplace

Alcove units in Finsbury Park

One alcove can be given over to a desk, with shelving overhead and storage underneath. It’s a neat way to work from home without giving up a whole room. We plan the desk height and depth with you. We make alcove units from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast and somewhere to keep books and records.

With a large share of homes around Finsbury Park built before 1919, lots of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Living-room storage in Finsbury Park

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Finsbury Park were built before 1919 (about 53%) and since 2000 (about 20%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 8 entries within half a mile of the centre of Finsbury Park. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Finsbury Park (about 53%) were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Most London houses of that age have chimney breasts with an alcove either side in the main rooms, the classic place for alcove units, scribed to walls that are rarely straight.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Witanhurst, about 2.1 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at. For a flat near Finsbury Park station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Finsbury Park is about 3 miles north-east of Tottenham, within the London Borough of Haringey. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Finsbury Park is part of that. Finsbury Park is one of 23 places on our list for Haringey.

We cover every part of N4, N7 and N5 for alcove units. If your home is on a street like Prah Road, Swan Lane and Moray Road, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for alcove units. Main roads around Finsbury Park include the A1201. We also cover Stroud Green (1 mile north-west), Nag's Head (1 mile south-west), Holloway (1 mile south-west), Crouch End (1 mile north-west) and Upper Holloway (1 mile west). Across the rest of Haringey, our area takes in Tottenham (3 miles north-east), Noel Park (2 miles north), Wood Green (2 miles north), Tottenham Green (2 miles north-east), South Tottenham (2 miles north-east) and Seven Sisters (2 miles north-east).

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bought units stop at standard heights, so there’s often wasted space overhead. We can take a bespoke unit to the ceiling or stop it at the picture rail, whichever looks right in your room. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so off-the-shelf pieces either do not fit or leave a gap either side. Furniture made for the space fills it.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Fitting day, step by step

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and describe the alcoves you want to fill.
  2. At the design visit we measure each alcove at several heights, because period walls are rarely flat or square, then talk through the design with you.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the units, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop the units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on the edges that meet the wall.
  5. On fitting day we level the units and scribe the edges so they follow the line of the plaster. Spray-painted units arrive finished; hand-painted ones are painted once fitted.

Preparing the room

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Getting a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

How it is made

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat covers edges and corners evenly, which suits panelled doors. The colour is agreed with you before we start.

Birch plywood

For alcove shelves that carry books, birch plywood helps keep them straight. We size the shelf for the span and the load.

Is it time for alcove units?

Often the alcoves are simply the biggest unused space in the room. Standard furniture seldom fits an alcove, leaving gaps at the sides and above. A fitted unit fills the recess.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • Alcoves that are not square
  • A place for a small desk
  • Somewhere to keep books and records
  • Everyday clutter left on show

Close to Stationers Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure

Questions we are often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having alcove units fitted in Finsbury Park?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

I live in a flat in Finsbury Park. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Alcove units are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

Can the two alcove units be different?

That’s your choice. Matching units give a balanced, formal look around the chimney breast, but you might want a desk on one side and cupboards on the other. We can keep the details the same so they still look like a pair.

Which finishes are there for alcove units?

There are two options: a spray-painted finish done in our workshop, or a hand-painted finish done on site. Both are in a colour agreed with you. Spraying gives a smooth, even surface, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Should alcove units go up to the ceiling?

That’s your choice. Some people take the units right to the ceiling for the most storage, while others stop them at the picture rail or leave open shelves above a low cupboard. We talk through the options during the design visit.

Practical tips

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Look for a chimney vent that needs to stay clear
  • Talk to your electrician early if you want new sockets
  • Measure anything large that must fit inside, like a record player
  • Think about what you will store before we meet

Don’t let stored things block the chimney breast vent, even when the cupboards fill up. Air moving through the chimney helps keep damp away, which protects the units too.

Keep heaters and very hot lamps from standing right against the paintwork, because constant heat is not kind to a painted finish.
