TV and media units in Finsbury Park, Haringey

Planning TV and media units for a home in Finsbury Park? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • A big screen that dominates the wall
  • Bought furniture that does not suit the room
  • Boxes and consoles on the floor

TV and media units for homes in Finsbury Park

Sockets often need to move for a built-in TV wall, like behind the screen or in the equipment cupboard. That job is for your electrician. Ideally it’s done before the unit goes in so the sockets land in the right place. People normally come to us about alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste and a screen at the wrong height; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Picture rails, deep skirting boards and plaster cornices are part of the character of older houses, and TV and media units need to meet those lines neatly. A large share of the housing around Finsbury Park went up before 1919, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about at the design visit. The top line can stop at the rail or run on to the cornice, depending on the room.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Think about the viewing height from your sofa
  • Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished
  • Think about whether you’ll upgrade the screen
  • Tell us about parking and access at the design visit

When you change equipment, use the cable routes we planned rather than drilling new holes. It keeps everything neat.

Keep heavy speakers and amplifiers on lower shelves.

Do you need TV and media units in Finsbury Park?

Games, controllers and remotes need a home. Drawers and cupboards hold them out of sight.

TV and media units can help with:

  • Boxes with no ventilation
  • Cables trailing across the wall
  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
  • A screen at the wrong height

If your home is one of the older houses near St John the Evangelist, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Living-room carpentry in Finsbury Park: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 53% of the housing in the area around Finsbury Park, with about 20% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Finsbury Park include Engine House of Metropolitan Water Board (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south-east, and Woodstock Road School (Grade II), under half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If you live on or close to a main road in Finsbury Park, let us know during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

The wider area includes historic houses like Witanhurst, about 2.1 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. If your children go to Stroud Green Primary School or a school nearby, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

What we don’t do

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Configuring the TV and sound system

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

FAQs: TV and media units in Finsbury Park

My house in Finsbury Park is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Does a conservation area in or near Finsbury Park affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How do you hide the TV cables?

Cable routes are built into the design, with openings and access panels. Where cables reach the wall depends on the sockets.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

It’s made in sections, sized for the route along with the room itself. At the design visit, we measure the route as well as the room.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

How fitting works for TV and media units

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it’s useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind, including the size of the screen.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the unit.
  4. We make the cupboards, shelves and panels in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

Preparing the room

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Starting with a design visit

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
