Alcove units in Seven Sisters: what you get
In a typical Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the chimney breast leaves an alcove on either side of it. Alcove units turn that space into cupboards and shelves that sit as part of the room. Where a room in Seven Sisters has a pair of alcoves, we design a unit for each one. Typical reasons to get in touch are clutter with nowhere to go and bare alcoves beside the fireplace, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around Seven Sisters, plenty of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. One pair of alcoves might take shelves and the other cupboards, a TV or a desk. Older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick, which changes how shelving is fixed, and long shelves are sized so they do not sag under books.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
Seven Sisters homes and alcove units
About 54% of the homes in the area around Seven Sisters went up before 1919, and about 14% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List has 22 entries within half a mile of the centre of Seven Sisters. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. Vans bringing furniture to Seven Sisters fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.
If your children go to Earlsmead Primary School or a school nearby, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. For an older house near Church of Holy Trinity, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
For alcove units, MDF gives crisp doors and smooth sides. Its moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice beside a chimney breast.
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting is done in the workshop, giving a smooth, even, factory-like surface. It works on simple doors and on more traditional ones.

What to send when you contact us
There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Approximate measurements of the space
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Questions we are often asked
I live near Seven Sisters station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Haringey and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
How do you fit alcove units in a flat in Seven Sisters?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Alcove units are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Can alcove units be fitted to uneven walls?
Yes. Most period alcoves are out of square in some way, so we scribe each unit to follow the wall. Adjustable feet or a plinth take care of a floor that slopes.
Should alcove units go up to the ceiling?
That’s your choice. Full-height units give the most storage, while others stop them at the picture rail or leave open shelves above a low cupboard. We’ll go through what suits your room when we visit.
What happens at the design visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
What affects the price of alcove units?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. We send a written quote after the design visit.
What happens on fitting day
Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.
- To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the alcoves is plenty.
- We visit to measure the alcoves, discuss the design and check the route from the street to the room. It is useful to tell us then about parking, as much of London is in a controlled parking zone.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized to come through your door.
- We carry the sections in, assemble them in the alcoves and scribe them to the walls.
Before fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
How to get a quote
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
