How we make fitted cupboards for Fitzrovia

In many London hallways, space is tight, so every cupboard needs to be worth the room it takes. A shallow cupboard can hold coats, shoes and bags without blocking the way, with hooks, a rail or shelves inside. Some people like a low bench with storage beneath, so there’s somewhere to sit by the door. If your home has space for laundry, cleaning things and boots and storage for towels and bedding, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a block, the lift, the corridors and the door to the flat set the size of each section. Most households around Fitzrovia live in purpose-built flats, so the sections for fitted cupboards are planned at the measuring visit. Floors in the corridor and the flat are covered on the way in.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Practical tips

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • List what you want to store before the design visit
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early
  • Keep boiler vents and meter access clear

Keep the boiler cupboard clear inside, and do not block the ventilation. When the boiler is serviced, the engineer can open the doors fully to get to it.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease first. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building, and it is best done early.

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Many blocks have entry systems, concierge desks or rules on booking the lift, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Communal areas and floors are protected on the way in.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the space. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.

How we price fitted cupboards

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The overall size of the piece
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.

What to send when you contact us

Ahead of the design visit, we will usually ask about:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Approximate measurements of the space

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

Fitzrovia homes and fitted cupboards

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Fitzrovia were built before 1919 (about 38%) and since 2000 (about 21%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Fitzrovia is partly covered by the Fitzroy Square Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

If your children go to All Souls CofE Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. Near listed buildings like Holy Trinity Church, less than half a mile west of the centre of Fitzrovia, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If you live near St Anne's Churchyard, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Fitzrovia

I live near London Euston station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room.

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in Fitzrovia?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that aren’t straight?

Yes. Each cupboard is trimmed to the shape of the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. That is one of the main reasons to choose fitted cupboards in an older house.

How much does a fitted cupboard cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A small boiler cupboard and a full run of hallway storage are very different jobs, so we quote once we have seen the space. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Why bespoke in Fitzrovia?

Standalone furniture moves with you; fitted cupboards stay with the house. A fitted cupboard is part of the room and is designed for this home. How long you will stay is worth weighing up. Large ready-made pieces can be hard to get up the stairs or into the lift, whereas fitted furniture comes in sections made for the way in. It is then put together in the room.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
