Fitted wardrobes across W1G: what to expect

Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are storage boxes stacked under the bed and no space in front for doors to swing.

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the design.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the wardrobes, so you can see what’s included.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop.
  5. We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers.

What goes into your quote

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry

  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement

Arranging a design visit

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Bedroom storage across W1G

Across W1G, bedrooms range from period rooms with high ceilings to compact rooms in newer blocks. Fitted wardrobes are drawn up to suit the room you actually have, with the inside laid out around what you keep.

The biggest shares of homes in the W1G postcode district were built before 1919 (about 38%) and since 2000 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Purpose-built flats are home to about 80% of households in the W1G postcode district, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early. Of the 1 place we have local pages for in W1G, 1 has its centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.

We cover the whole of London, so homes in W1G are well within our area. Tell us about access and parking when you first get in touch.

Fitzrovia: The wider area includes historic houses like Handel Hendrix House, about 0.8 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. For a flat near London Euston station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Looking after your furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:

  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations

New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, open and close the doors gently and avoid knocking hangers against the inside.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose and adjust doors before a rub marks the paint.

Do you need fitted wardrobes?

After a loft conversion, the new bedroom usually needs storage that suits the slopes. Storage built into the slope uses space that would otherwise go to waste, leaving the floor open.

Requests we hear often include:

  • No space in front for doors to swing
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting

What affects the price in W1G

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How big the furniture is
  • How square the room is

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

Before the design visit

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

With no grain to show through, MDF gives a calm painted finish. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice for fitted work.

Hanging rails

Long rails need support so they don’t bend under heavy coats. We plan the rail lengths with that in mind.

Flats, leases and landlords

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Questions we’re often asked

Do you work in W1G?

Yes. We cover W1G and the rest of Camden. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused and can include bedside shelves. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

Will fitted wardrobes get up the stairs to my flat?

The wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. If you’re in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to walls.
