Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

We use plinths and adjustable feet to level the units on a sloping floor. Scribe strips close the gap to a wall that is not straight.

Moisture-resistant MDF

For painted cabinet fronts, moisture-resistant MDF is our usual choice, because it stays flat.

Bespoke kitchens in Fitzrovia

We often use moisture-resistant MDF in kitchens, because it copes with a room that gets steamy. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colours you choose. If your home has making the most of a galley kitchen and spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets, that’s what kitchens are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a block, the pipes and risers in a kitchen are normally fixed in place. With purpose-built flats home to most households around Fitzrovia, cabinets are often designed to work around them, keeping access where it’s needed. Plumbing and electrics are for your plumber and electrician.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Kitchens in Fitzrovia homes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 38% of the housing in the area around Fitzrovia, with about 21% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. There are 426 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Fitzrovia. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and kitchens can be designed to work around them. Purpose-built flats are more common around Fitzrovia than across Camden: about 80% of households, against about 56%, based on Census 2021. So the route in, from stairs to lifts, is part of the design.

For a flat near London Euston station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For families living near All Souls CofE Primary School, a drawer set aside for lunch boxes and water bottles keeps mornings calmer. Near listed buildings like Holy Trinity Church, less than half a mile west of the centre of Fitzrovia, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Fitzrovia is about 1 mile east of St Pancras, part of the London Borough of Camden. Design visits and fitting in Fitzrovia can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. Our work takes in places right across Camden, large and small.

Every address in NW1W, W1T and W1G is within our area for bespoke kitchens, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Euston Road, Duke's Road and Market Place, along with the roads around them, whether you want bespoke kitchens or another piece made for the room. Fitzrovia sits close to the A501 and A4200. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Other places close to Fitzrovia include Euston (1 mile north-east), Marylebone (1 mile south-west), Bloomsbury (1 mile east), Somers Town (1 mile north-east) and Soho (1 mile south-east). Elsewhere in Camden, we also cover Hampstead (3 miles north-west), West Hampstead (3 miles north-west), Kentish Town (2 miles north), Greenhill (3 miles north-west), Chalk Farm (2 miles north) and Dartmouth Park (2 miles north).

Landmarks near Fitzrovia

Our area takes in the homes around UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies, Wellcome Library and Carpenters Arms and the streets around them. There is a railway station in Fitzrovia itself: London Euston station. A little further out are London Foot Hospital (less than half a mile south-west) and Blindiana Museum (within half a mile west). Green spaces nearby include St. James's Park Lake and Primrose Hill.

Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?

There’s a place for both. If the room is square and the budget is tight, a ready-made kitchen may do the job. For period homes, awkward rooms or a painted look, bespoke tends to earn its place. Standalone furniture takes up floor without using the height of the room. Built-in pieces use the full height and the awkward corners, leaving more floor clear.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, and the quote follows.

What happens on fitting day

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Many blocks have entry systems, concierge desks or rules on booking the lift, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Floors in the flat and the common parts are protected while the furniture comes in.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you cook.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and go through the layout, storage and finish, including where the sink and appliances will go.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made and finished in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician handle the plumbing, gas and electrics.

Preparing the room

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in Fitzrovia?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live near London Euston station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them, message us from the contact page.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

How we price bespoke kitchens

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What we need to know

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.
