Alcove units in Grove Park, Hounslow

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on alcove units in Grove Park starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Toys and paperwork with no proper home
  • Shop-bought shelving that does not fill the recess
  • Room to work in an alcove

Alcove units for homes in Grove Park

Few alcoves in older houses are truly square. Walls bow, corners wander and floors slope. Each unit is made at our workshop to our measurements and scribed to the walls when we fit it, so the edges follow the plaster instead of leaving a gap. A plinth or adjustable feet take up any slope in the floor. If you are living with old alcove cupboards that have seen better days and furniture that doesn’t fit the alcove, that is what alcove units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Where housing types are mixed, as they are in much of London, living rooms can be very different from one street to the next. Some have alcoves either side of a chimney breast, some a bay window, and some neither. Alcove units are designed for the room in Grove Park that you have, and long shelves are sized not to sag.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Alcove units for homes in Grove Park

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Grove Park were built before 1919 (about 43%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 18%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Grove Park, 17 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Purpose-built flats are home to about 41% of households in the area around Grove Park, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Chiswick House, about 0.5 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. Close to Dukes Meadows? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If you live in a flat close to Chiswick station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Grove Park is about 4 miles west of Hounslow, in the London Borough of Hounslow. Anywhere in Grove Park, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our work takes in places right across Hounslow, large and small.

Design visits and fitting in W4, TW9 and SW14 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If you are just outside Grove Park, we also cover Kew (1 mile west), Strand-on-the-Green (1 mile west), North Sheen (1 mile south-west), Turnham Green (1 mile north-east) and Chiswick (1 mile north-east). Other parts of Hounslow we cover include Hounslow (4 miles west), Feltham (7 miles west), Brentford (2 miles west), Isleworth (3 miles west), Woodlands (3 miles west) and Lampton (4 miles west).

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.

Bespoke alcove units or ready-made?

Bespoke furniture isn’t instant: it needs a design visit, a quote and time in the workshop. In return, the unit is planned for your alcove alone, not the nearest catalogue size. Recesses, sloping ceilings and awkward corners are where ready-made furniture struggles most, and most homes have at least one. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Why us?

  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight

How fitting works for alcove units

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. We plan the details of the day at the measuring visit. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the alcoves is plenty, and mention if you live in a flat or up a few flights of stairs.
  2. At the design visit we measure the alcoves and also the way in: the front door, the hall and any stair turns.
  3. We then send a written quote for the units.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized to come through your door.
  5. On fitting day the sections come in, are joined in place and scribed to the walls. A spray-painted finish arrives done; a hand-painted one is applied once the units are in.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Arranging a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Shelves

Shelf heights are planned around your things, from paperbacks to tall art books. Upper shelves can be shallower for a lighter look.

Birch plywood

For alcove shelves that carry books, birch plywood helps keep them straight across a broad recess. We size the shelf for the span and the load.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.
