How we make fitted wardrobes for SW14

Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in a colour agreed with you. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth and scribing them to the walls and ceiling. Typical reasons to get in touch are condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and wasted space beside the chimney breast, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.

  1. You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
  3. A written quote follows. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. We then make the wardrobes in our workshop, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use.

What goes into your quote

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Fitted wardrobes across SW14: local notes

Across SW14, from Barnes, Chiswick and Mortlake outwards, we design and fit fitted wardrobes. External walls can be colder than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.

About 50% of the homes in the SW14 postcode district went up before 1919, and about 16% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. More than a third of the homes in the SW14 postcode district (about 50%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Older bedrooms typically have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use. Of the 7 places we have local pages for in SW14, 5 have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.

Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, so a van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges. Let us know about parking at the design visit.

Mortlake: If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Parish Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If your children go to Thomson House School or a school nearby, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Could you do it yourself?

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Under a sloping ceiling, standard wardrobes leave most of the space unused. A fitted wardrobe can be shaped to the ceiling line, with hanging where it is tall and drawers or shelves where it is low.

What to check before you book

  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

How we price fitted wardrobes

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • The internal fittings
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How square the room is
  • The number of doors and drawers

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Getting in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

The usual reason is simple: there isn’t enough storage. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. A fitted wardrobe uses the full height of the wall, so you get more storage from the same floor space.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits wardrobe carcasses, shelves and drawers. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish suits wardrobes in a period room. The colour is agreed with you.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?

That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better. We look at it with you when we measure.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Is the furniture made to order?

It’s built in our workshop. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
