TV and media units for homes in Heath Park

A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, behind the screen or inside a cupboard. That job is for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes falls under Part P of the Building Regulations. It is best done before we fit so the sockets land in the right place. People typically come to us about a big screen that dominates the wall and games, controllers and remotes everywhere; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Around Heath Park, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so that layout is worth knowing well. We tend to plan TV and media units along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light, though every room is measured first.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

What happens on fitting day

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish set out.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room.

Before fitting day

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Getting a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Is it time for TV and media units?

Upgrading to a bigger screen is a common trigger. The old stand looks too small, or the screen dominates the wall. Shelves and cupboards around the screen make it sit better in the room.

Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:

  • Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
  • Boxes with no ventilation
  • Space for a soundbar and speakers
  • Cables trailing across the wall

If your home is one of the older houses near Saint Alban Church of England, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Living-room carpentry in Heath Park: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 48% of the housing in the area around Heath Park, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Heath Park include Frances Bardsley Lower School (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. Vans bringing furniture to Heath Park fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We go through parking and access during the design visit.

Hare Hall, about 0.8 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. For a family home near Squirrels Heath Infant School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

Your questions about TV and media units in Heath Park

Do you make TV and media units for homes in Heath Park?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London, and Heath Park is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Heath Park?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Does the unit work if the TV is on a bracket?

Where the TV is to be wall-mounted, we plan the unit around the bracket. The bracket needs a sound wall, which we look at during the design visit.

How much will my TV unit cost?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a written quote after the design visit.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.

Practical tips

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
  • Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
  • Decide where you will sit, so the screen height suits it

Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. At first, lift boxes and speakers into place rather than pushing them, so the paint is not scuffed.

Keep heavy speakers and amplifiers on lower shelves.

Is bespoke worth it?

Screen sizes change, and a stand that suits today’s set may look small with the next. We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
