Built-in Bookshelves in Heath Park

In Heath Park, we design built-in bookshelves around the room you actually have. We design your built-in bookcase at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • A home library or study
  • Books piled on the floor
  • Bare walls that could hold shelving

Fitting day, step by step

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the wall and your books.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up, check the wall and plan the shelf spans with you. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
  3. You receive a written quote setting out the shelving, materials and finish, for you to look over.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop.
  5. We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall.

How to prepare

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Getting a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Advice

How we make built-in bookshelves for Heath Park

Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. Shelves can stop beneath the picture rail, run to the cornice or be cut around the details. Since period walls are rarely flat, the edges are scribed to follow them. People typically come to us about storage for children’s books and games and a bare wall above a doorway, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Heath Park, so that layout is worth knowing well. Built-in bookshelves typically go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

Practical tips

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Plan heavy items for the lower shelves
  • Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
  • Measure your tallest and deepest books
  • Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide

Leave a little air behind books on an external wall so air can move. Watch for any musty smell or marks.

Keep any gap or opening above a radiator clear of books and objects. Trapped heat isn’t good for the room or the books.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Do you cover homes near Gidea Park station?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Heath Park?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Do photos help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?

The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Heath Park

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll usually ask about:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • How you want to use the space

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Living-room carpentry in Heath Park: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 48% of the housing in the streets around Heath Park, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Heath Park, Historic England’s list includes Frances Bardsley Lower School (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 52% of households in the neighbourhood around Heath Park, based on Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

The wider area includes historic houses like Hare Hall, about 0.8 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live in a period home close to Saint Alban Church of England, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. Living in a block of flats near Gidea Park station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the bookcase is fitted. It’s easy to touch up later.

Spray-painted finish

Because the bookcase is sprayed before fitting, it arrives finished. Let the paint cure fully before loading heavy books.
