About our fitted home offices in Hook
Light matters in a home office. A screen facing a window can be hard to read, and a window behind you can cause glare. We plan the desk position with the window in mind, often with the light to one side. We look at it early at the measuring visit in Hook. We make home offices from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are flimsy shelves that won’t take the weight and wires with no tidy route.
Around Hook, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the spare bedroom or dining room often doubles as the office. Cupboards that close over the desk let the room switch back when you’ve finished. We plan the cable routes around your sockets.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What affects the price in Hook
There is no set price, because there’s no set room. What affects it comes down to:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- The number of doors and drawers
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
Getting in touch
There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Your postcode and the borough
It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
Where other trades come in
Not everything around fitted home offices is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:
- Converting a loft to make room for an office
- Electrical work for the office, which your electrician carries out
- Installing IT equipment or broadband
If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Hook homes and fitted home offices
In the streets around Hook, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 43%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Hook include Orchard Court (Grade II), under half a mile north-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 32% of households in the neighbourhood around Hook live in terraced houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Terraced houses often have alcoves or a small back bedroom that can take a built-in desk.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Fitznells Manor, about 2.6 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. If you live in a period home close to St Paul's, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. For a flat near Chessington North station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Why bespoke in Hook?
Standalone office furniture can move with you, which suits a short stay. Fitted furniture stays put, and it makes more of the room. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, which shows up against standard furniture. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Fitting day, step by step
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going, with floors protected throughout.
- It starts with a short note from you about the space.
- We visit to measure the room and the way in, and go through the design.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- We build the office in our workshop, in sections, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The sections are brought in, joined and scribed to the walls, ready for work.
How to prepare
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
Getting a quote
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To book one, drop us a line using the contact form.

Questions from Hook
Do you cover homes near Chessington North station?
Yes. We cover all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hook?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
Does my lease affect fitted furniture?
Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
It’s made in sections, sized for the route as well as the room. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.
Materials and finishes
Shelves
Shelves in a home office carry books, files and folders. How far a shelf spans and what it holds both count. We size each shelf to carry its load without sagging.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting on site lets the office be finished alongside the woodwork around it. It is easy to touch up later. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first.
