Fitted cupboards in Hook: what you get
A utility or boot room has to work hard, every day. We can build tall cupboards for the vacuum, ironing board and mop, with housing for a washing machine or tumble dryer where you want it. Your plumber connects the appliances and your electrician handles any sockets, so we plan the cupboards around their work. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about somewhere for coats, shoes and bags and floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat.
Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, and that space can take shallow fitted storage. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Hook, it is worth looking up as well as down. If a boiler or cylinder sits there, it keeps its clearances and access.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the fitted cupboard we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Fitting day, step by step
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
- We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach. Boiler work itself is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.
- A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
- The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
- The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.
How to prepare
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
How to get a quote
It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
Your questions about fitted cupboards in Hook
Is parking a problem for fitting in Hook?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
I live near Chessington North station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?
Yes, while keeping access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned to open easily.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Hook
Off-the-shelf cupboards rarely suit older houses. Sloping floors, walls that lean and odd alcove widths leave gaps that collect dust and look untidy. A built-in cupboard follows the room instead.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- Landing shelves for bedding and towels
- A utility room with proper storage
- Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing
- Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving
Fitznells Manor, about 2.6 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
When you need someone else
Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Building work or structural changes
- Any plumbing in a utility room
- Wiring for lights or sockets
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Making use of awkward spaces in Hook
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Hook were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 43%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Hook include Orchard Court (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Kingston upon Thames sets its own rules. Where a street in Hook is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat close to Chessington North station, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
