About our alcove units in Mill Hill
We work across London, including Mill Hill. It starts with a design visit, where we measure the alcoves and talk through the design. After that we send a quote in writing, and once you are happy the units are made at our workshop and fitted in your home. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are furniture that doesn’t fit the alcove and clutter with nowhere to go.
A good part of the housing around Mill Hill is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, which decides where alcove units sit. Walls in houses of that age are normally straighter than in Victorian ones, though they’re still checked and scribed where needed.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Materials and finishes
Spray-painted finish
Because the units are sprayed before they come to you, there is less painting to do in your home, in the colour agreed with you. Treat the units gently while the paint cures fully.
Shelves
How thick a shelf needs to be depends on how wide the alcove is and what it holds. Wider alcoves and heavy books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support.
Is bespoke worth it?
Some flat-pack shelves are thin and start to sag once they’re loaded. We size our shelves for their span and what they’ll carry, using birch plywood where strength matters. Still, a decent off-the-shelf unit can be the sensible choice if you’re renting or moving soon. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Your questions about alcove units in Mill Hill
Does a conservation area in or near Mill Hill affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Mill Hill Broadway station?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Is it possible to have a desk built into one alcove?
Yes. One alcove can take a desk with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard beneath. Height and depth are agreed with you.
Should alcove units go up to the ceiling?
It’s up to you. Some people take the units right to the ceiling for the most storage, while a low cupboard with shelves above keeps the room feeling lighter. We’ll go through what suits your room when we visit.
What happens when you come to measure?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.

There are 42 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Mill Hill. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. How fitting day works
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going, with floors protected throughout.
- You get in touch to say you’d like alcove units, with a note of the room they’re in.
- A design visit follows, where we measure up and agree the layout with you. If one alcove needs a desk or a TV space, this is when we plan it.
- A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
- The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The units are fitted in your home, ready to fill.
How to prepare
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
How to get a quote
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Why people ask for alcove units in Mill Hill
Many people ask about alcove units because the alcoves are the most obvious wasted space they have. Standard furniture seldom fits an alcove, leaving gaps at the sides and above. Built-in units use the whole recess from wall to wall.
We are often asked to help with:
- Furniture that does not fit the alcove
- Alcoves that are not square
- A place for a small desk
- Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast
For a family home near St Paul's CofE Primary School NW7, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.
What to check before you book
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- Whether the route into your home has been checked

What alcove units cannot fix
We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- New sockets or wiring (your electrician handles those)
- Decorating the rest of the room
- Treating damp in the chimney breast or walls
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How it works.
