Bespoke Kitchens in Mill Hill
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on bespoke kitchens in Mill Hill starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls
- A painted dresser for the kitchen
- A kitchen island with room around it

How we make bespoke kitchens for Mill Hill
Older London homes are rarely simple places to fit a kitchen. Walls lean, corners are not square and floors slope, which shows up quickly along a run of cabinets. Each cabinet is trimmed to the wall and levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet, so the worktop you choose can sit level. If you’re living with tall larder storage and a kitchen island with room around it, kitchens made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
A larger semi or detached house may have room for a utility area or boot room by the back door. Around Mill Hill, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing. Tall cupboards for the washing machine, coats and cleaning things can be made to match the kitchen. Plumbing for any appliance is for your plumber.
You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Flats, conversions and lettings
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit.
If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Moisture-resistant MDF
A painted MDF door looks crisp and even, and the moisture-resistant grade suits a kitchen.
Plinths and scribe strips
We trim the edges to follow the wall, closing any gaps.
Is it time for bespoke kitchens?
Many people come to us because a standard kitchen doesn’t suit their room. Standard units are made in fixed sizes, and the gaps get filled with panels. A bespoke kitchen is made to the room from the start.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- Spaces sized for your oven and fridge
- Open shelves with cupboards below
- A central island in a larger kitchen
- More storage in a small kitchen
Close to Bittacy Hill Park? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.
Choosing a carpenter
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Fitting day, step by step
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You tell us about the room and how you use it.
- We visit to measure and go through the design and storage. We note where the water, gas and sockets are now.
- A quote follows, covering the design and finish.
- We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe registered engineer handle the services. We do not arrange these trades ourselves.
How to prepare
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
Ask for a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Advice
Common questions about bespoke kitchens
Is parking a problem for fitting in Mill Hill?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do you cover homes near Mill Hill Broadway station?
Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
We plan the route in during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
What happens when you come to measure?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.
What materials do you use for kitchens?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.
Which worktops and appliances can I have?
The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose, and we design the cabinets around them. Your quote sets out what’s included.
