Fitted home offices in Mill Hill

Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?

Bespoke furniture lets the desk, shelves and cupboards be planned together. Separate off-the-shelf pieces seldom match in height or depth. The result is a calmer, more ordered room. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Fitted home offices in Mill Hill: what you get

A good home office has a place for everything. We can plan drawers, file storage, a cupboard for the printer and shelving, so the work surface stays clear. Doors can hide the working things when you’re done. For a home in Mill Hill, we design it all around what you need to store. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about a room with two jobs to do and a laptop that moves from room to room.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Mill Hill, a converted loft can be a quiet place to work, with storage tucked under the slope. For lofts, we work in rooms already converted or boarded. Elsewhere, an alcove beside a chimney breast or a bay can take a desk.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

The problems fitted home offices solve

A spare room that has to do two jobs is another reason. A built-in desk and storage can leave space for a bed. It puts the room to work most of the time.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • A laptop that moves from room to room
  • A desk buried under papers
  • Shelving that bows under the load
  • A spare room that has to be an office and a guest room

For families living near St Paul's CofE Primary School NW7, a desk with shelves and closed storage can serve both work and homework.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

Common questions about fitted home offices

Is Mill Hill in the area you cover for fitted home offices?

Yes, we work across Barnet, Mill Hill included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Mill Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

From workshop to your room

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the room.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about the equipment you use.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. We make the desk, shelves and cupboards in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The office is fitted and set level, ready for your first day at the desk, with the cable routes left open.

How to get a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

What it’s made from

Shelves

Open shelves above a desk keep books in reach. Lower, deeper shelves suit files and a printer. We plan the depths at the measuring visit.

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF because it’s stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It suits doors, drawer fronts and panels, where the finish is most on show.

Working from home in Mill Hill

In the neighbourhood around Mill Hill, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 43%) and before 1919 (about 21%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of Mill Hill is in the Mill Hill Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Barnet are set locally. If your street in Mill Hill is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. We ask about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

If you live near Bittacy Hill Park, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day. For a flat near Mill Hill Broadway station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

What fitted home offices cannot fix

Not everything around fitted home offices is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Structural work, such as removing walls or chimney breasts
  • Electrical work for the office, which your electrician carries out
  • Setting up computers, screens or networks
