Need loft storage in Mill Hill?

Loft storage in Mill Hill

Behind an eaves door, there’s often insulation and a need for ventilation. We design the storage so it does not block airflow or crush insulation. If anything looks wrong behind the eaves, it is worth asking whoever converted the loft. When we visit in Mill Hill, we will see what’s there. Most enquiries start with a dormer that isn’t being used and seasonal things cluttering the loft room, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Mill Hill, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

How fitting works for loft storage

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You contact us about storage in your converted loft.
  2. At the design visit we plan the storage and measure the stairs, landings and loft doorway.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We build the storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to get up to the loft.
  5. The sections go up the stairs, are assembled under the eaves and set level. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted in the loft.

How to prepare

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Advice

What we do not do

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Converting the loft itself, which isn’t our work
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Building Regulations approval for a conversion

Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Mill Hill homes and loft storage

About 43% of the homes in the area around Mill Hill went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 21% before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Mill Hill include Holcombe House (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-west, and The Headmasters House (Grade II), less than half a mile south. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Barnet included. Vans bringing furniture to Mill Hill fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Parking and access are planned during the design visit.

Close to Bittacy Hill Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's Church, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using.

Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the design visit.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Do you need loft storage in Mill Hill?

Standard wardrobes do not fit under a sloping ceiling. A wardrobe made for the slope uses the full height. It is a common need in a loft bedroom.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Boxes and suitcases with no home
  • A boarded loft with no proper shelving
  • A converted loft with no fitted furniture
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs

For a flat near Mill Hill Broadway station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

What affects the cost of loft storage

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The width and height of the space
  • How square the room is
  • Parking and unloading on your street

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What to send when you get in touch

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

To get a quote for loft storage in Mill Hill, drop us a line using the contact form. Tell us which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, with sizes if you have them. Next comes a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

Questions we are often asked

Do you cover homes near Mill Hill Broadway station?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Mill Hill?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Will eaves storage block the ventilation?

A good design avoids that. We look behind the knee wall at the measuring visit and plan the storage so air can still move. Insulation and ventilation work itself isn’t ours.

Can you get furniture up narrow loft stairs?

Every piece is made in sections that fit up the stairs. At the design visit, we measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landings. That way, even a large wardrobe can reach the loft.

Which materials go into your loft storage?

The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

How much does loft storage cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The mix of cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and the finish, all play a part. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.
