Honest limits
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Painting the walls, ceiling and woodwork around the units
- Making good damaged walls before fitting
- Removing or altering a chimney breast, which is structural work
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Alcove units for homes in Rise Park
In a typical Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the chimney breast leaves an alcove on either side of it. Built-in alcove units put that space to work as cupboards and shelving that sit as part of the room. If your home in Rise Park has alcoves like these, each alcove gets a unit designed for it after we’ve measured them at a design visit. People usually come to us about space for a growing book collection and clutter with nowhere to go; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
A house from between the wars usually has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, so alcove units are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Rise Park, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

More for homes in Rise Park
Built-in living-room furniture in Rise Park
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Rise Park were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 50%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 44%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. Where a home in Rise Park is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Havering sets its own rules. If your street in Rise Park is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. We ask about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
If you live near Raphael Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. Hare Hall, about 1.3 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
Rise Park is in the London Borough of Havering, about 1 mile south of Romford. We design and make alcove units for homes in Rise Park and the rest of Havering, as part of our work in every London borough. We list Rise Park among 22 places we cover in Havering.
In RM1, RM5 and RM2, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. We also cover the places around Rise Park: Collier Row (1 mile south-west), Romford (1 mile south), Rush Green (2 miles south), Chadwell Heath (2 miles south-west) and Becontree Heath (3 miles south-west). Elsewhere in Havering, we also cover Hornchurch (3 miles south-east), Heath Park (2 miles south-east), Elm Park (3 miles south), Rainham (5 miles south), Upminster (4 miles south-east) and Ardleigh Green (2 miles south-east).

Do you need alcove units in Rise Park?
Moving into a period house often prompts it. People who have just moved in want storage that suits the age of the house, and the alcoves are an obvious place to start. It’s easier to do before the room fills with boxes.
Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:
- Bowed walls and sloping floors
- Bare alcoves beside the fireplace
- Storage that suits a period room
- Toys and paperwork with no proper home
If you live in a period home close to St James, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.
Before you choose who makes it
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Have they thought about parking near you?
Could you do it yourself?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
How we price alcove units
Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- The width and height of the space
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- The number of doors and drawers
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.
Helping us understand the room
There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- How you want to use the space
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
To make a start, message us from the contact page and let us know which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.
From workshop to your room
You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about during the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room.
- It starts with a short message from you about the alcoves.
- We visit to measure the alcoves and go through the design, including the paint finish.
- A quote in writing follows, with the finish written in alongside the design and materials.
- We make the units in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood. If you chose spray painting, that’s done in the workshop too, for a smooth, even surface.
- The units are fitted and scribed to the alcoves.
- New paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat the surfaces gently at first.
How to prepare
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
Starting with a design visit
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Your questions about alcove units in Rise Park
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Rise Park?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Gidea Park station?
Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Will alcove units block the chimney vent?
We design around any vent so it stays open. Ventilation helps keep a capped chimney dry. If there’s damp on the breast already, it is best sorted before fitting.
