About our fitted cupboards in Rise Park

Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, under the stairs, in a hallway or beside the front door. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly and still keeps access clear. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so we design doors or removable panels that make that easy. Typical reasons to get in touch are cupboards for a utility or boot room and boxing in a boiler with room for servicing; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A good part of the housing around Rise Park is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

Is Rise Park in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London, and Rise Park is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do you cover homes near Gidea Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, use our contact form.

Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and make sure an engineer can reach it.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Caring for painted furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:

  • Point out anything that needs access
  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

Keep the boiler cupboard clear inside, and don’t block the ventilation. When the boiler is serviced, the engineer can open the doors fully to get to it.

At the design visit, let us know how parking and access work. Many London streets are in controlled parking zones, and blocks of flats can have rules about lifts and deliveries.

From workshop to your room

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Fitted cupboards arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch and tell us where the cupboards should go. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the cupboards we’ve agreed.
  4. The cupboards are made at our workshop.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Arranging a design visit

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Many off-the-shelf units use chipboard with a printed surface. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, painted in a colour you choose, so the finish can match the room. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, which shows up against standard furniture. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Fitted storage in Rise Park

In the neighbourhood around Rise Park, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 50%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 44%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. About 84% of households in the streets around Rise Park live in detached or semi-detached houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. A house like that normally has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your street in Rise Park joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

Hare Hall, about 1.3 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. Living in a block of flats near Gidea Park station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Close to Raphael Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.
