Rosehill Under-Stairs Storage

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on under-stairs storage in Rosehill starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs

Under-stairs storage designed for your room

Under-stairs storage for homes in Rosehill

Under-stairs storage isn’t only for houses. A maisonette, a split-level flat or a staircase down to a lower floor can all leave space underneath. We measure the space and the route in, so the sections made in our workshop fit through the front door and along the hall. Wherever your home is in Rosehill, the process is the same. If your home has space under the stairs that’s hard to use and an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Walls in houses from between the wars are typically straighter than in older ones, but seldom perfect. Around Rosehill, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Each piece is levelled on site, so doors, lids and drawers line up.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. It starts when you contact us about the space under your stairs. It helps to say whether the meters are under there.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the stairs, the hall and what you need to store, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. We make the drawers, doors and carcasses in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use.

Preparing the room

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Questions from Rosehill

Does a conservation area in or near Rosehill affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Rosehill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do photos help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. We work in London and nowhere else, across all the boroughs and the City of London.

Is the furniture made to order?

Each piece is built in our workshop for the room it is going into, then brought to your home and fitted. It’s built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Can under-stairs storage work around the fuse board?

Yes. It is common to find a meter or fuse board under the stairs, and access has to be kept. We note them at the measuring visit and plan the drawers and doors around them. We don’t move meters, so the storage works around their current position.

What it’s made from

Birch plywood

Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. It goes into the carcasses, the shelves and the drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.

Moisture-resistant MDF

With wet shoes and coats coming in, a moisture-resistant grade of MDF is a sensible choice. It gives the painted fronts a smooth base, and stays stable once it is fitted.

What affects the price in Rosehill

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The width and height of the space
  • Spray painting or hand painting

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

What we need to know

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Examples of the look you’re after

To make a start, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.

What under-stairs storage cannot fix

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe engineer
  • Structural changes to the staircase itself
  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves

Do you need under-stairs storage in Rosehill?

With more people working from home, some want a desk tucked under the stairs. If the space opens onto a room, a compact desk with shelves above can sit beneath the stairs. It won’t replace a full home office, but it suits paperwork and a laptop.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter
  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it
  • No room for a small desk or a place to work
  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags

If you live in a period home close to St Peter's Church, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.

What to check before you book

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Rosehill, Historic England’s list includes Hill House (Grade II), under half a mile north, and Mecca Bingo Club (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Sutton are set locally. Depending on your street in Rosehill, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.
