Alcove units in Snaresbrook

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.

About our alcove units in Snaresbrook

Alcove units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it works best. MDF gives smooth doors and panels that take paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted on site, in the colour you choose. We make alcove units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about worn or badly fitted alcove units and alcoves that are wasted space.

A house from between the wars typically has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, and the proportions of alcove units are set to match. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Snaresbrook, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

The depth of an alcove is set by the chimney breast. Standard cabinets can stand proud of the breast or sit too far back. We set the depth to suit the room, whether that’s flush with the breast or a little shallower. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Why choose us

  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • A design visit, then a written quote
  • Saturdays by arrangement

What it is made from

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth raises the unit and takes up uneven floors. Its height can match the skirting board.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home once the units are in. Small marks are easy to touch up, and it gives a softer, traditional look.

Living-room carpentry in Snaresbrook: local notes

About 33% of the homes in the streets around Snaresbrook went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 27% before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how alcove units are fixed and fitted. The centre of Snaresbrook is within about a quarter of a mile of the Forest School Conservation Area. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. About 33% of homes in the streets around Snaresbrook date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Interwar front rooms usually have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, and alcove units are planned around both.

Valentines Mansion, about 2.4 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For a flat near Wood Street station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Close to Lloyd Park? Alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

Questions from Snaresbrook

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Snaresbrook?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Is Snaresbrook in the area you cover for alcove units?

Yes, we work across Redbridge, Snaresbrook included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will alcove units fit if my walls aren’t straight?

Yes. Few alcoves in older houses are truly square, so each unit is scribed to the wall on site. A plinth or adjustable feet set it level on a sloping floor.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Can an alcove unit include a desk?

Yes. Many people use one alcove for a desk and the other for cupboards if you want the two sides to differ. We will plan the desk around how you work.

Should alcove units go up to the ceiling?

That depends on the room and what you’d like to store. In a tall period room, units can stop under the picture rail or the cornice. We agree the height during the design visit.

What affects the price in Snaresbrook

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How square the room is
  • How big the furniture is

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Helping us understand the room

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit. To arrange it, message us from the contact page and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Fitting day, step by step

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. You get in touch with a short description of the alcoves and your ideas.
  2. We visit to measure, look at how the walls run and note the skirting, picture rail and any vent. We also talk through heights, doors and shelves.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the layout, materials and finish. If anything needs changing, just tell us.
  4. Once you’re happy, the units are made at our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the units go in, are scribed to the alcoves and levelled on a plinth or feet.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
