Alcove units for your home in Woodford

What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. Alcove units arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the alcoves is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the alcoves and also the way in: the front door, the hall and any stair turns. Parking is worth mentioning too, since a van often needs a permit or a paid bay in London.
  3. We then send a quote in writing for the units.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized to come through your door.
  5. On fitting day the sections come in, are joined in place and scribed to the walls. A spray-painted finish arrives done; a hand-painted one is applied once the units are in.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

How to get a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

About our alcove units in Woodford

One alcove can be given over to a desk, with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard below. It’s a neat way to work from home without giving up a whole room. Desk height and depth are agreed with you, with a gap or hole planned so cables can reach the sockets. We make alcove units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are furniture that doesn’t fit the alcove and everyday clutter left on show.

A house from between the wars normally has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, and the proportions of alcove units are set to match. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Woodford, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.

We write quotes in plain English. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Tips worth knowing

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Measure anything large that must fit inside, like a record player
  • Let us know about stairs, parking and access early
  • Make the alcoves easy to reach for measuring
  • Consider whether the units should reach the ceiling

To clean painted units, a soft cloth that is barely damp is enough. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, as they can mark the finish. Wipe it dry when you have finished.

Use a mat under plants, vases and drinks, since standing water can mark painted shelves. Dry any spills quickly.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Some flat-pack shelves are thin and start to sag once they’re loaded. Shelves in a bespoke unit are sized for the span and the load. That said, if you’re renting or moving soon, a good off-the-shelf unit may make more sense. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Questions from Woodford

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Highams Park station?

Yes, homes across Redbridge and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Woodford?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you fit a desk into an alcove?

Yes. You can have a desk in one alcove and cupboards in the other. The desk is planned around the way you work.

What paint finish can I have on alcove units?

Either a spray-painted or a hand-painted finish. A sprayed finish is very smooth and even. We’ll help you choose during the design visit.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

How do I get started?

Just fill in our short enquiry form. It helps to send rough measurements and a few photos, and we’ll arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

Living-room carpentry in Woodford: local notes

About 33% of the homes in the streets around Woodford went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The Woodford Broadway Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Woodford. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Redbridge included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Woodford. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Hurst House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a family home near Woodbridge High School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. Close to The Highams Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the cupboard off the floor and hides any slope. It can be set to line up with the skirting.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints beautifully, which makes it our choice for doors and visible panels. It is a good match for alcoves on an external wall.

When is bespoke worth it?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
