About our alcove units in Leytonstone
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. We can cut units around these details, stop beneath them or run up to meet them, depending on the look you want. The plinth height can match the skirting. We agree these details at the measuring visit, before anything is made. Most enquiries start with standard units leaving gaps at the sides and a desk that tucks into an alcove, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and they set the lines that alcove units have to meet. A large share of the housing around Leytonstone went up before 1919, so those details are worth looking at closely at the design visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Honest limits
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Treating damp in the chimney breast or walls
- New sockets or wiring (your electrician handles those)
- Making good damaged walls before fitting

Why bespoke in Leytonstone?
Shelves in some flat-pack furniture are thin and can bow under books. Shelves in a bespoke unit are sized for the span and the load, with birch plywood where it is needed. That said, if you are renting or moving soon, a good off-the-shelf unit may make more sense. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

Common questions about alcove units
My house in Leytonstone is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Do you make alcove units for homes in Leytonstone?
Yes. We cover all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London, and Leytonstone is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
Should alcove units go up to the ceiling?
That’s your choice. Full-height units give the most storage, while others stop them at the picture rail or leave open shelves above a low cupboard. We’ll go through what suits your room when we visit.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Are alcove units spray painted or hand painted?
There are two options: a spray-painted finish done in our workshop, or a hand-painted finish done on site. Both are in a colour agreed with you. Spraying gives a smooth, even surface, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Living-room storage in Leytonstone
Homes built before 1919 make up about 65% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Leytonstone, with about 12% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for alcove units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List records 7 entries within half a mile of the centre of Leytonstone. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Terraced houses are home to about 34% of households in the neighbourhood around Leytonstone, based on Census 2021. Terraced houses in London often have alcoves beside a chimney breast, which suit alcove units built to their exact widths.
Close to Leyton Jubilee Park? Alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. For a flat near Leytonstone High Road station, alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

How fitting day works
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

The problems alcove units solve
Others want a proper home for books, records or a TV. An alcove unit can be shaped around what you own, with shelf heights and depths to suit.
Some of the things we are asked to solve include:
- Shop-bought shelving that does not fill the recess
- Bare alcoves beside the fireplace
- Units that sit well with original features
- Walls too uneven for standard furniture
If you live in a period home close to Church of St John the Baptist, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
