Alcove units for homes in South Woodford

In a typical Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the chimney breast leaves an alcove on either side of it. Built-in alcove units put that space to work as cupboards and shelving that sit as part of the room. If your home in South Woodford has alcoves like these, each alcove gets a unit designed for it after we’ve measured them at a design visit. People usually come to us about a desk that tucks into an alcove and worn or badly fitted alcove units; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Windows, doors, radiators and sockets decide where furniture can and cannot go. Whatever kind of home you have in South Woodford, alcove units are planned around those first. Then the cupboards, shelves and any space for a screen are arranged for how you use the room.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

From workshop to your room

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. It starts with a short message from you about the alcoves.
  2. At the design visit we measure up, agree the layout and talk about colour and finish. You can choose a spray-painted finish from our workshop or a hand-painted one done in your home.
  3. The written quote then sets out the design, the materials and the finish you’ve picked.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units in your home and scribe them to the walls; a hand-painted finish is done on site after fitting and is easy to touch up later.
  6. Paint needs time to cure, so go gently with the new units at first.

Before fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Starting with a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the measuring visit.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Why people ask for alcove units in South Woodford

Many people ask about alcove units because the alcoves are the most obvious wasted space they have. Standard furniture seldom fits an alcove, leaving gaps at the sides and above. Built-in units use the whole recess.

Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:

  • Old alcove cupboards that have seen better days
  • Somewhere to keep books and records
  • Everyday clutter left on show
  • Storage that suits a period room

For a flat near Wood Street station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
  • How doors and drawers are fitted

Your questions about alcove units in South Woodford

Will a conservation area stop me having alcove units fitted in South Woodford?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is parking a problem for fitting in South Woodford?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Which boards do you build with?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, and the quote says which is used where.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us, and we’ll see what we can do.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. We cover London only: every London borough and the City of London.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf units can work in an alcove, and they normally cost less to buy. The catch is the fit: standard widths rarely match the recess, and uneven walls make every gap obvious. A bespoke unit is built to the alcove and scribed to follow the wall. Gaps behind, beside and above ready-made furniture collect dust, and fitted furniture closes them.

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Why choose us

  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Saturdays by prior arrangement

Read bespoke vs off-the-shelf or what to look for in a quote.

Looking after your furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Check whether there’s a vent in the chimney breast
  • Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
  • Decide what goes behind doors and what goes on show
  • Decide whether the units stop at the picture rail or run to the ceiling

Keep any chimney vent clear once the units are in, even when the cupboards fill up. Ventilation helps keep the chimney breast dry.

Use a mat under plants, vases and drinks. Wipe up spills straight away.

Then we can work out where to load and unload.

Valentines Mansion, about 2.3 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.
