Alcove units for your home in Upper Walthamstow

Common questions about alcove units

I live in a flat in Upper Walthamstow. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you make alcove units for a home in Upper Walthamstow?

Yes. Upper Walthamstow is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Waltham Forest and London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can alcove units be fitted to uneven walls?

Yes. Few alcoves in older houses are truly square, so each unit is scribed to the wall on site. Adjustable feet or a plinth take care of a floor that slopes.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

We do not do electrical work. New or moved sockets are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting. We plan the units around the sockets, with cut-outs where needed.

Alcove units in Upper Walthamstow: what you get

A classic layout is a low cupboard with open shelves above. The cupboards take the things you’d rather not see, while the shelves hold books and the things you want on show. The top of the cupboard makes a useful surface at a comfortable height. We set the heights to suit the room and what you’ll store. We make alcove units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are furniture that doesn’t fit the alcove and worn or badly fitted alcove units.

Where housing types are mixed, as they are in much of London, living rooms can be very different from one street to the next. You might have alcoves, a bay, a wide open-plan room or a compact one. The design for your home in Upper Walthamstow starts from its own walls, with shelves sized so they don’t sag.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

Looking after your furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Look for a chimney vent that needs to stay clear
  • Clear the alcoves before the design visit if you can
  • Consider whether the units should reach the ceiling
  • Measure anything large that must fit inside, like a record player

Do not let stored things block the chimney breast vent. Ventilation helps keep the chimney breast dry.

Now and then, check handles and hinges are still tight.

Alcove units in Upper Walthamstow: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 40% of the housing in the streets around Upper Walthamstow, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 12 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Upper Walthamstow. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Waltham Forest included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Upper Walthamstow is covered by it. Parking and access are planned at the measuring visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Walthamstow House (Corpus Christi School), original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. The wider area includes historic houses such as Valentines Mansion, about 2.9 miles east. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For families living near The Woodside Primary Academy, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set heights, so there is often wasted space overhead. We can take a bespoke unit to the ceiling or stop it at the picture rail, whichever looks right in your room. Standalone furniture leaves gaps behind and above it that gather dust, while fitted pieces are scribed tight to the walls and ceiling.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

How fitting day works

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You contact us about the alcoves you want to fill.
  2. We come to measure and talk through cupboards, shelves, heights and doors. If one alcove needs a desk or a TV space, this is when we plan it.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

Getting ready for fitting day

Advice

How we price alcove units

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The overall size of the piece
  • The number of doors and drawers

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What to send when you get in touch

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.
