Fitted cupboards in Surrey Canal: what you get

Landings often have a corner or a stretch of wall that does nothing. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves set at the heights you choose. We plan it so doors open without catching the stairs or the banister. If your home has storage for towels and bedding and a cupboard for the meters with easy access, fitted cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Many homes around Surrey Canal were built since 2000, and newer houses that have had the loft converted often have sloping ceilings and eaves to use. For lofts, the storage goes into spaces that are already converted or boarded. Wherever they go, fitted cupboards are fixed to suit the wall.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Is bespoke worth it?

A ready-made cupboard rarely suits a boiler or meter. The space needs to suit the boiler’s instructions and leave meters reachable, and a cupboard made for the spot can allow for them. Off-the-shelf depths can crowd a compact new-build room, while fitted furniture can be made shallower where space is tight. It can still go to the ceiling.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

From workshop to your room

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so let us know what applies at the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space.
  2. At the design visit we plan the cupboards and check how the sections will get in. It is useful to let us know about parking then, as a van usually needs a permit or a paid bay in a controlled parking zone.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the cupboards in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring the sections in and fit them, scribed to the walls.

Before fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Arranging a design visit

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.

Fitted cupboards in Surrey Canal: local notes

About 37% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Surrey Canal went up since 2000, and about 34% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. A van working in Surrey Canal will usually need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Tell us what parking is near you at the design visit.

For families living near Ilderton Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If your home is one of the older houses near St Katharine with St Bartholomew, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep.

Practical tips

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Point out anything that needs access
  • Think about how the cupboards will get in
  • Go easy on new doors for a while
  • Let us know how parking works on your street

Your needs may change once the cupboards are in use. Where we have fitted adjustable shelves, you can move them as needed as your storage changes.

If there is damp on a wall, have it sorted before we fit. A cupboard on a damp wall can trap moisture, particularly on a colder external wall. Ventilation inside the cupboard helps too.

Is it time for fitted cupboards?

Some people want to hide a boiler, meter or fuse board. They’re rarely attractive, but they need to stay accessible, so a cupboard has to be designed around them. Doors, panels and ventilation are planned around them.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving
  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner
  • A linen cupboard on the landing

The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 2.1 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Common questions about fitted cupboards

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Surrey Canal?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London, and Surrey Canal is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

I live in a flat in Surrey Canal. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, provided the cupboard keeps to the boiler maker’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and make sure an engineer can reach it.

Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?

Yes, that’s part of the job. Few walls in a period house are straight, so every cupboard is scribed and levelled.

How much time does fitting need?

The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk it through during the design visit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

We spray paint in the workshop for a smooth, factory-like finish. You choose the colour.

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors on a meter or fuse board cupboard need to open easily, so engineers can reach what’s inside.
