Fitted bedroom furniture in Surrey Canal
About 37% of the homes in the area around Surrey Canal went up since 2000, and about 34% between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Surrey Canal, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Lewisham included. Vans bringing furniture to Surrey Canal fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Parking and access are planned during the design visit.
For a family home near Ilderton Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. Living in a block of flats near South Bermondsey station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If you live near Deptford Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

About our walk-in wardrobes in Surrey Canal
You do not need a spare room to have a walk-in wardrobe. A corner or one end of a large bedroom can become a dressing area, with doors or left open. Any new partition wall is for your builder, while we make and fit the furniture. Typical reasons to get in touch are a walk-in wardrobe in a box room and long and double hanging planned around your clothes, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Many homes around Surrey Canal have been built since 2000, and in newer homes, bedrooms tend to be compact, with plasterboard stud walls. Heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor, rather than relying on the board alone. Any built-in cupboard that came with the home can be replaced or extended to match.
The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Fitting day, step by step
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber, ideally before fitting day.
- We start with the space and the clothes it needs to hold, from long coats to shoes.
- We visit to measure up and go through the layout.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
- The units are made and finished in our workshop.
- Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room. We then check the doors and drawers with you.
Before we arrive
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
Starting with a design visit
Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.
Related advice
Materials and finishes
Moisture-resistant MDF
On a cooler external wall, moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice, with ventilation allowed for.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting in the room lets the units match the doors and skirting.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
Common questions about walk-in wardrobes
My home in Surrey Canal is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Walk-in wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Surrey Canal?
Yes, Surrey Canal is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Lewisham and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.
How are walk-in wardrobes priced?
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, use our contact form.
How long does fitting take?
Every room is different. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you’ll know before we start.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Usually not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

What it costs
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- The overall size of the piece
- Parking and unloading on your street
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.
Before the design visit
Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Examples of the look you are after
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.
Honest limits

- Building work to create the room
- Electrical work in the room
- Curing damp in the walls
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
