Loft storage in Surrey Canal

Many loft rooms are bedrooms, and storage for clothes is the first need. Wardrobes under the slope, drawers in the knee wall and shelves in the dormer can all work together. Designed as one, they give the room calm, consistent lines. We design them around what you need to store in Surrey Canal. Most enquiries start with furniture that can’t get up to the loft and a loft room that still feels unfinished; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A hall in a home built since 2000 is often compact, with several doors leading off it, which leaves little wall for storage. Around Surrey Canal, many homes were built since 2000, so that is worth planning for. Even a shallow run can hold coats and shoes without crowding the doors.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Common questions about loft storage

Can you make loft storage for a home in Surrey Canal?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London, and Surrey Canal is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

How do you fit loft storage in a flat in Surrey Canal?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Eaves cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Do you do the loft conversion too?

No. Our work is storage in loft rooms that are already converted, or in boarded lofts. A conversion is building work, and Building Regulations apply. Once your loft is converted, we can design the storage.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it is useful to be around at the end.

Storage in Surrey Canal homes: local notes

Homes built since 2000 make up about 37% of the housing in the area around Surrey Canal, with about 34% built between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Surrey Canal, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Augustine (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles north-west, and The Kentish Drovers Public House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. So a van fitting furniture in Surrey Canal normally needs a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 2.1 miles east. If your own home is a period one, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk. For an older house near St Katharine with St Bartholomew, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using.

Surrey Canal is about 1 mile south-east of New Cross, part of the London Borough of Lewisham. Homes in Surrey Canal are part of the area we cover for loft storage. Surrey Canal is one of 22 places on our list for Lewisham.

Design visits and fitting in SE16, SE15 and SE14 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If your home is on a street like Pump Lane, Bush Road and Water Lane, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for loft storage. The A200 and A2208 runs close to Surrey Canal; on busy main roads, unloading eaves cupboards takes a little planning. Neighbouring places we cover for loft storage include South Bermondsey (1 mile west), Surrey Quays (1 mile north-east), Rotherhithe (1 mile north), Peckham (1 mile south-west) and Deptford (1 mile south-east). Elsewhere in Lewisham, we also cover St Johns (2 miles south-east), Catford (3 miles south-east), Lewisham (2 miles south-east), Sydenham (4 miles south), Hither Green (3 miles south-east) and Crofton Park (2 miles south).

What happens on fitting day

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. You tell us about the loft room.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and agree the layout and colour.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and sprayed there if you chose a spray finish.
  5. We fit it in the loft and check each door and drawer with you.
  6. Go easy on new paintwork while it cures; hand-painted surfaces are easy to touch up later.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Arranging a design visit

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

Is it time for loft storage?

A new loft conversion often needs storage to finish it. The room is there, but the furniture to fit it is not. Storage made for the slopes completes it.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised
  • Nowhere to store bags and boxes
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
  • Wasted space behind the knee walls

If your children go to Ilderton Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

What loft storage cannot fix

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Building work to turn a loft into a room
  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician
  • Any work on the structure of the house

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Why bespoke in Surrey Canal?

If you only need a few boxes in a boarded loft, standalone shelving may be enough. A fitted design earns its place in a loft room you live in. At the design visit, we will tell you honestly which approach suits your loft. In an open-plan room, standalone pieces can look scattered, while fitted furniture can give the space structure.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

Why choose us

  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • More than 300 projects completed
  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home

What affects the cost of loft storage

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Parking near your home
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How square the room is

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What to send when you contact us

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:

  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

To make a start, get in touch through our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.
