Our fitted wardrobes across SE14
What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes. It’s worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. Most enquiries start with no space in front for doors to swing and storage boxes stacked under the bed, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
- We visit to measure the room and discuss the design.
- We send a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
- We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, set level and scribed to the walls and ceiling. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.
Quotes in SE14
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Starting with a design visit
It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across SE14
SE14 has bedrooms of every shape, from bay-fronted rooms in older houses to tight rooms in modern flats. Fitted wardrobes are drawn up to suit the room you actually have.
About 37% of the homes in the SE14 postcode district went up before 1919, and about 23% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 51% of households in SE14 live in purpose-built flats, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day. Of the 6 places we have local pages for in SE14, 3 have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.
Homes across SE14 range from period terraces to modern blocks, and we work in all of them. Wherever you live, it starts with a visit and a quote.
New Cross: The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 1.5 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Public Library, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
What it’s made from
Hanging rails
Rails are set at heights that suit your clothes: a high rail for long items and double rails for shorter ones.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits wardrobe carcasses, shelves and drawers. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.
Flats, leases and landlords
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
Where other trades come in
We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:
- Taking out a chimney breast to make space
- Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
- Redecorating around the wardrobes
Do you need fitted wardrobes?
Sometimes it is a change in how a room is used. Fitted wardrobes give it proper storage. Inside, the layout can change as needs change.
A few of the things people ask us to solve include:
- A bedroom that never feels tidy
- An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
- A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
Pricing fitted wardrobes in SE14
There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Getting in touch
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you contact us, it’s useful to send:
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Your postcode and the borough
- What the furniture needs to hold
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Questions we’re often asked
Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?
Uneven floors are normal in older homes. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?
Yes. The wardrobe is shaped to the ceiling line, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns tricky space into storage.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
Which boards do you build with?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, and the quote says which is used where.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Normally not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent.
How long does it take to fit wardrobes?
It depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop before we come to fit them.
