- Redecorating around the wardrobes
- Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Fitted wardrobes in Surrey Canal: what you get
A fitted wardrobe is built into the room itself, running floor to ceiling and wall to wall where that suits the room. That leaves no gap above to gather dust and no wasted space at the sides. If you’re planning fitted wardrobes in Surrey Canal, we start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need. Typical reasons to get in touch are dusty space on top of the wardrobe and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A large number of homes around Surrey Canal date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats with compact bedrooms. In a compact bedroom, fitted furniture that reaches the ceiling and uses the corners makes the most difference. Boxing for pipes and risers is designed around rather than left as dead space.
A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Surrey Canal
In the streets around Surrey Canal, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 37%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 34%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of Surrey Canal, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. About 37% of homes around Surrey Canal were built since 2000, well above the figure for Lewisham as a whole, about 17%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Newer homes often have stud walls and compact rooms, so fixings and sizes are planned with that in mind.
Queen's House, about 2.1 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. Close to Deptford Park? Fitted wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Surrey Canal
Others simply want the room to feel calmer. A run of painted doors from wall to wall looks quieter than several separate pieces and keeps everything out of sight.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
- A room too narrow for hinged doors
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
- Clothes with nowhere proper to go
Living in a block of flats near South Bermondsey station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
What to check before you book
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?

Tips worth knowing
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
- Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
- Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
- Empty the area where we’ll be working
Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them rather than packing one end. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail, so the rail stays straight.
Do not overload a single rail or shelf. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use, so mention anything unusually heavy when we plan.
Common questions about fitted wardrobes
Is parking a problem for fitting in Surrey Canal?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Surrey Canal?
Yes, we work across Lewisham, Surrey Canal included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
How do I get a quote?
It’s easiest to drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Is it possible to have storage over the bed?
Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. It is planned so there’s room around the bed and the room does not feel enclosed.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Older homes rarely have straight walls or level floors. A standalone wardrobe can lean, rock or show tapering gaps. We set fitted wardrobes level and scribe them to the walls and ceiling. In a compact new-build room, standard sizes rarely fit the walls exactly, and fitted furniture uses that space. It can also be planned around boxed-in pipes and risers.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit.

What happens on fitting day
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Any hand painting can be finished on site.
- You contact us with a few details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
- At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you.
- We send a written quote with the layout, materials and finish.
- The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
