When you need someone else

Not everything around bespoke kitchens is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Structural changes to the room
  • Plastering, tiling or decorating
  • Moving water or waste pipes

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Larders and dressers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Islands where space allows

Bespoke kitchens for homes in The Wrythe

We make the cabinets; the worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose. Knowing the appliance sizes early lets us leave the right spaces, so everything fits as it should. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote. We make kitchens from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are an island where space allows and tall larder storage.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around The Wrythe, kitchens often have a back door to the garden and a window over the sink. The cabinets and any larder or dresser are made for those walls. The worktop, sink and appliances you choose are built in.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Made-to-measure kitchens in The Wrythe

About 40% of the homes in the area around The Wrythe went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 21% between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 19 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of The Wrythe. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. Where a home in The Wrythe is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that at the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

For families living near Victor Seymour Infants' School, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen. For a flat near Carshalton station, kitchens are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Close to Carshalton Park? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. You tell us about the kitchen and where it is in your home.
  2. We visit to plan the layout and check how the cabinets will get into the room.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. In our workshop we build the kitchen from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in pieces that suit the route in.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish; plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Starting with a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in The Wrythe

Does a conservation area in or near The Wrythe affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you cover homes near Carshalton station?

Yes, homes across Sutton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

How long does fitting take?

It depends on the kitchen. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.

Which worktops and appliances can I have?

You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and the cabinets are made to suit them. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

How it is made

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site, once the kitchen is fitted. It’s easy to touch up later.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives a smooth surface for painted doors, in a kitchen as anywhere.

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Let us know about parking at the design visit
  • Make sure an island will not crowd the room
  • List what needs a home in the kitchen
  • Choose your appliances before the design is final

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Houses move a little with the seasons, so hinges allow small adjustments later.

Talk to your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe engineer early. The pipes, cables and gas supply need to suit the layout, so it helps if everyone knows the plan.
