Loft storage designed for your room
How we make loft storage for The Wrythe
Loft rooms are often bedrooms, so storage for clothes matters. A wardrobe under the slope, knee-wall drawers and dormer shelves make a complete set. Designed as one, they give the room calm, consistent lines. For a home in The Wrythe, it is planned around your things. If your home has boxes and suitcases with no home and needing storage in a loft office, eaves cupboards made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Walls in houses from between the wars are usually straighter than in older ones, but seldom perfect. Much of the housing around The Wrythe is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Each piece is levelled on site, so doors, lids and drawers line up.
Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Fitting day, step by step
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You get in touch and tell us about the loft and the stairs up to it.
- We visit to measure the loft and the way up, including the top flight and any tight turn.
- A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections small enough for the loft stairs.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit.
Before we arrive
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Advice
Loft storage for homes in The Wrythe
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around The Wrythe were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 40%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 21%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of The Wrythe, Historic England’s list includes Bedford Cottage Woodcote House (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west, and Strawberry Lane Baptist Church (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Sutton are set locally. If your street in The Wrythe is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. We ask about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
If you live in a period home close to Bishop Andrewes Church, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle. Close to Carshalton Park? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. The wider area includes historic houses like Nonsuch Mansion, about 2.9 miles west. If your own home is a period one, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using.

What affects the price in The Wrythe
What you pay depends on:
- The number of doors and drawers
- The width and height of the space
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Spray painting or hand painting
Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.
What to send when you contact us
A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Approximate measurements of the space
- How you want to use the space
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Materials and finishes
Birch plywood
Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. It goes into the carcasses, the shelves and the drawers, with the edge either shown or painted.
Spray-painted finish
For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. We apply it in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.
Could you do it yourself?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Your questions about loft storage in The Wrythe
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in The Wrythe?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Can you make loft storage for a home in The Wrythe?
Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London, and The Wrythe is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
How long is the fitting for eaves storage?
How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Because everything is built in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the route up to the loft as clear as possible.
Do you carry out loft conversions?
No. Our work is storage in loft rooms that are already converted, or in boarded lofts. A conversion is building work, and Building Regulations apply. Once your loft is converted, we can design the storage.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
How much does loft storage cost?
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The mix of cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and the finish, all play a part. We set it all out in a quote in writing.
Why bespoke in The Wrythe?
In a loft room, walls and floors are seldom square. Standard furniture leaves visible gaps. We scribe our storage to the slopes and walls, and set it level. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
