Alcove units for homes in Tottenham Hale
Period alcoves are rarely square. Walls bow, corners wander and floors slope. We make each unit in our workshop to the measurements we take, then scribe it on site, so the edges follow the plaster instead of leaving a gap. Adjustable feet or a plinth set it level. If you are living with alcoves that are wasted space and shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess, that’s what alcove units are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
A large number of homes around Tottenham Hale date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes tend to have open-plan living rooms with no chimney breast. So alcove units often give the room its shape, along a full wall or around the TV. Plasterboard stud walls are common in newer homes, so heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Living-room carpentry in Tottenham Hale: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Tottenham Hale were built since 2000 (about 35%) and before 1919 (about 27%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 6 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Tottenham Hale. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Vans bringing furniture to Tottenham Hale fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Parking and access are planned at the measuring visit.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as The Ferry Boat Inn, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Living in a block of flats near Tottenham Hale station? Do you need alcove units in Tottenham Hale?
A busy family living room is another reason. Toys, games, paperwork and gadgets need somewhere to go, and closed cupboards hide them away. The shelves above can then stay tidy.
Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:
- Old alcove cupboards that have seen better days
- Furniture that does not fit the alcove
- A desk that tucks into an alcove
- Somewhere to keep books and records
If you live near Bruce Castle Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.
What to check before you book
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
How fitting works for alcove units
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Alcove units are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.
- You contact us with a short note about the room and the units you have in mind, and we arrange a design visit at a time that suits you.
- We come to measure the alcoves, look at the walls and agree the design with you, noting the skirting, picture rail and any chimney vent.
- We send a written quote for the units.
- We make the cupboards and shelves in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted finish or for hand painting on site.
- We fit them in your home, scribing them to the walls, so they sit tight to the chimney breast.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Caring for painted furniture
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Mention parking and access when we visit
- Make a rough list of what the cupboards need to hold
- Talk to your electrician early if you want new sockets
- Think about how the units meet the picture rail and cornice
Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. For the first while, treat the units gently, lifting things rather than sliding them and avoiding any scrubbing.
Watch for damp marks on the chimney breast or the walls near the units. The cause is a job for the right trade, not something paint will hide.
Questions we’re often asked
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Tottenham Hale?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.
Do you cover homes near Tottenham Hale station?
Yes, homes across Haringey and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can you build alcove units for alcoves that aren’t square?
Yes. We measure each alcove carefully at the measuring visit, then the units are made at our workshop and scribed to the walls when we fit them.
Can you fit a desk into an alcove?
Yes. One alcove can take a desk with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard beneath. We plan the height and depth with you, with a way planned for cables to reach the sockets.
Do alcove units need to reach the ceiling?
It depends on the room and the look you want. In a tall period room, units can stop under the picture rail or the cornice, or run to the ceiling for a built-in look. We agree the height at the measuring visit.
How do I get started?
Simply send us a few details through our contact form. Rough sizes and a few photos help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, followed by a written quote.
Is bespoke worth it?
A bespoke unit takes longer to arrive than something from a shop: it needs a design visit, a quote and time in the workshop. What you get is a unit planned for your alcove, rather than the nearest standard size. Standalone furniture fixed to plasterboard needs the right fixings, and often doesn’t get them. Built-in pieces are designed with the right fixings from the start.
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
