About our window seats in Wealdstone
Many windows have a radiator beneath them. Over a radiator, the seat needs a grille or open front so warmth can reach the room. The front of the seat includes a grille, with space left around the radiator. When we visit in Wealdstone, we will check the radiator and plan around it. Most enquiries start with wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room and no space for toys and games, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
An interwar house usually has a proper landing, sometimes with a recess or an airing cupboard, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Wealdstone, it is worth looking up as well as down. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

From workshop to your room
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know at the measuring visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- You send us a note about the window and the seat you’d like.
- We visit to measure and talk through the design, the storage and the finish.
- A quote in writing follows, with the finish written in.
- The seat is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is done there for a smooth, even surface.
- The seat is fitted and scribed, and any hand painting is done on site.
- Give new paintwork gentle use while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.
Preparing the room
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Storage in Wealdstone homes: local notes
In the neighbourhood around Wealdstone, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 37%) and before 1919 (about 29%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List records 7 entries within half a mile of the centre of Wealdstone. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Around Wealdstone, about 29% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Harrow as a whole, about 10%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of window seats.
Headstone Manor, about 0.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front. If you live near Headstone Manor Recreation Ground, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For an older house near Holy Trinity Church, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear.

Questions from Wealdstone
Does a conservation area in or near Wealdstone affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Do you cover homes near Harrow & Wealdstone station?
Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.
How is a window seat priced?
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The shape of the window, the mix of drawers and lids, and any grille all play a part. We set it all out in a written quote.
Can a window seat go over the radiator?
Yes. Many windows have a radiator beneath, and we design the seat around it. A grille in the front lets the heat into the room. Anything stored over the radiator will stay warm, so we plan the storage with that in mind.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.
Before and after fitting day
Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Tell us about parking during the design visit
- Decide on cushion thickness before the design visit
- Move furniture away from the window so we can measure
- Note whether your window has working shutters
A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. It is worth keeping a record of the paint colour. Spray-painted surfaces wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth.
Check now and then that hinges and handles are tight. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If something stops working smoothly, use our contact form and tell us.

What else we make in Wealdstone
What it’s made from
Birch plywood
Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. It goes into the frame, the seat top and the drawers, with the edge either shown or painted.
Pull-out drawers
Pull-out drawers bring everything into view. Children can typically manage drawers more easily than a heavy lid. We make the boxes from birch plywood for strength.
Bespoke window seats or ready-made?
Ready-made benches are made in fixed widths and depths. Bespoke seats are made to the size of the space, so nothing is wasted, with drawers, a lift-up lid or a mix below. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors aren’t perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.
What you get with us
- Scribed to uneven walls
- Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
- We work across all London boroughs
- Every quote follows a design visit
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.
