West Brompton Alcove Units

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make alcove units for homes in West Brompton, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Alcoves that are wasted space
  • Shop-bought shelving that does not fill the recess
  • Tired cupboards in the alcoves

How fitting works for alcove units

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections built in our workshop come in next. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the alcoves is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the alcoves and also the way in: the front door, the hall and any stair turns. It is useful to tell us then about parking, as much of London is in a controlled parking zone.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized to come through your door.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the alcoves and scribe them to the walls. A spray-painted finish arrives done; a hand-painted one is applied once the units are in.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Arranging a design visit

You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Alcove units in West Brompton: what you get

We fit alcove units across Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit to measure the alcoves and agree the layout. Then you receive a quote, and once you are happy the units are made in our workshop and fitted in your home. If you’re living with clutter with nowhere to go and furniture that doesn’t fit the alcove, alcove units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

A large share of the homes around West Brompton were built before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Houses of that age normally have a chimney breast in the front and back reception rooms, with an alcove either side, and those alcoves are the natural home for alcove units. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet, then cut neatly around the skirting and any picture rail or cornice.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Some flat-pack shelves are thin and start to sag once they’re loaded. Shelves in a bespoke unit are sized for the span and the load, using birch plywood where strength matters. That said, if you’re renting or moving soon, a good off-the-shelf unit may make more sense. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

Before and after fitting day

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Look for a chimney vent that needs to stay clear
  • Bring the sizes of anything that has to fit in the cupboards
  • Mention parking and access when we visit
  • Have any damp looked at before the units are made

Make a note of the paint colour used for future touch-ups. Small marks on a hand-painted finish are easy to touch up, and it helps to keep a little of the paint.

Keep heaters and very hot lamps from standing right against the paintwork.

For a family home near St Cuthbert with St Matthias CofE Primary School, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. If you live near Gwendwr Garden, alcove units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. Boards, parts and finishes

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Scribed side panels
  • Birch plywood

How it’s made

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the cupboard off the floor and hides any slope. Its height can match the skirting board for a tidy finish.

Spray-painted finish

Because the units are sprayed before they come to you, there is less painting to do in your home. Give the paint time to cure fully once fitted.

Questions from West Brompton

Is West Brompton in the area you cover for alcove units?

Yes, West Brompton is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in West Brompton?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

Electrical work isn’t something we do. New or moved sockets are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting. We plan the units around the sockets, with cut-outs where needed.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Is it possible to have a desk built into one alcove?

Yes. A desk in one alcove, with shelves above and storage below, works well in many rooms. Height and depth are agreed with you, with a route left for cables.
