Making use of awkward spaces in West Brompton
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around West Brompton were built before 1919 (about 70%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 12%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of West Brompton is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Hammersmith and Fulham included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in West Brompton. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.
If you live near Gwendwr Garden, under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Luke, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. For families living near St Cuthbert with St Matthias CofE Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Under-stairs storage in West Brompton
Where a staircase is open to a living space, the storage under it becomes part of the room. Here the doors, drawer fronts and finish matter as much as the storage behind them. Fronts can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. The result should look like part of the house, not an afterthought. If your home has an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter and cleaning things with no proper home, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
With a large share of homes around West Brompton built before 1919, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
What we don’t do
It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
- Moving gas pipes under the stairs
- Structural changes to the staircase itself

Questions from West Brompton
My home in West Brompton is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
I live near West Brompton station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
Caring for painted furniture
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Note the things that need a home under the stairs
- Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
- Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
- Let us know if the hall is being decorated
Wiping the fronts with a soft, damp cloth is normally all they need. Avoid scourers and harsh chemicals, and dry the surface after wiping. Handles and the edges of drawers are touched most, so give them a wipe now and then.
Wet coats and shoes can mark paint and leave damp in a closed cupboard. Let them dry before they go away, and air the cupboard if it feels damp.
How fitting works for under-stairs storage
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so it’s useful to tell us during the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.
- You contact us about the space under your stairs.
- At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
- We send a written quote for the storage.
- The drawers, doors and carcasses are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angle of the stairs.
- On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls.
Before we arrive
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Materials and finishes
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting suits flat, panelled and angled fronts alike. It’s carried out in the workshop for a smooth, even coat. The colour is your choice.
Pull-out drawers
Pull-out drawers bring the deep, low end of the space within reach. Each one is sized for what it will hold. Many designs use a run of drawers stepping down with the stairs.
