Fitted wardrobes across SW5: what to expect
Fitted wardrobes are built to the room, from the floor to the ceiling and from wall to wall where the space allows. There is no dusty gap on top and no tricky space at the ends. For a bedroom in SW5, we start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and damp or musty clothes against an external wall.
Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote.
- You get in touch and tell us what you keep in your wardrobes now.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
- The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
- We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.
Quotes in SW5
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
Why homeowners in SW5 choose us

Arranging a design visit
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across SW5
If your bedroom in SW5 has a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for storage. In rooms without one, a full wall of storage often works best. Each design is scribed and levelled on site.
Homes built before 1919 make up about 70% of the housing in SW5, with about 11% built between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. About 70% of homes in SW5 were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths, scribed to walls that are not straight. About 28% of households in the SW5 postcode district live in flats in converted or shared houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
Controlled parking zones cover large parts of London, and depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking during the design visit.
West Brompton: Close to Gwendwr Garden? Keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. Living in a block of flats near West Brompton station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
What affects the price in SW5
Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- How big the furniture is
- The number of doors and drawers
- Spray painting or hand painting
Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.
Before the design visit
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Examples of the look you are after
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.
The problems fitted wardrobes solve
Some bedrooms are hard to furnish. Slopes, chimney breasts, low windows and doors in tricky spots leave standard wardrobes with nowhere to go. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
- A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
- An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
Before and after fitting day
Getting the most from fitted wardrobes starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- List the things that will not hang, like jumpers and shoes
- Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
- Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
- Tell us about the lift and stairs in your block
Hang clothes evenly along each rail rather than packing one end. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail.
Close doors gently and do not let them swing into furniture. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
With no grain to show through, MDF gives a calm painted finish. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted wardrobes.
Spray-painted finish
Spraying in the workshop means the doors come to your home finished, in the colour agreed with you. Give the paint time to cure fully.
Questions we’re often asked
Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings and fitted storage suits them well. We measure the slope carefully at the measuring visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.
How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?
It’s worked out with you when we measure, based on what you wear and how much of it there is. Some shelves can be adjustable so the layout can change.
Should I send pictures?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
Do you work in SW5?
Yes. We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and that includes SW5.
What if my bedroom floor isn’t level?
We allow for it from the start. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls, so the doors line up properly.
Will fitted wardrobes get up the stairs to my flat?
We make the wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. If you are in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to walls.
