How we make TV and media units for West Brompton

If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan the panels and shelves around the bracket position and the cable route behind it. If it stands on the unit, we size the top to suit. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about boxes with no ventilation and a TV that looks out of place in the room.

Picture rails, deep skirting boards and plaster cornices are part of the character of older houses, and they set the lines that TV and media units have to meet. Homes built before 1919 make up a large share of the housing around West Brompton, so those details are worth looking at closely at the measuring visit. The top line can stop at the rail or run on to the cornice, depending on the room.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Fitting day, step by step

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
  3. You get a quote in writing covering the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it is in and is easy to touch up later. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Arranging a design visit

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Questions we are often asked

Does a conservation area in or near West Brompton affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in West Brompton?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Can landlords use you for a rented flat?

Yes. We make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let as well as for homeowners. We will need access agreed with any tenants.

What are your TV and media units made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Caring for painted furniture

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
  • Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes
  • Decide where you’ll sit, so the screen height suits it
  • Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf

Cupboard doors may settle slightly with use. Hinges can typically be adjusted to line them up again.

Ask your electrician about new sockets rather than running extension leads through the unit, and do not overload sockets.

TV and media units for homes in West Brompton

In the neighbourhood around West Brompton, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 70%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 12%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 21 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of West Brompton. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. So a van fitting furniture in West Brompton usually needs a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay arranged through the council. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so the van can be planned for.

Near listed buildings like Church of St Cuthbert and St Matthias, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of West Brompton, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. Garden Lodge, about 0.6 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If your children go to St Cuthbert with St Matthias CofE Primary School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

How it’s made

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth raises the unit and hides a sloping floor. Its height can match the skirting board.

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat covers edges and corners well. The colour is agreed before we start.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf TV units come in a few set colours. We paint ours in the colour you choose. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Pricing TV and media units in West Brompton

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The internal fittings

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

What to send when you get in touch

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you contact us, it is useful to send:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Approximate measurements of the space

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will arrange a design visit.
