Fitted home offices for your home in West Brompton
Questions we’re often asked
Can you fit fitted home offices to the uneven walls of an older house in West Brompton?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to West Brompton station?
Yes, homes across Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Do you wire in sockets for the home office?
We do not do electrical work, so sockets are for your electrician. The desk is planned with routes for cables and space for any sockets. It helps to agree the positions at the design visit.
About our fitted home offices in West Brompton
Cables are easy to forget and hard to hide later. Cable holes and routes are built into the desk and cupboards. Any new sockets are fitted by your electrician, with the furniture designed to suit. We look at the sockets when we visit in West Brompton. People normally come to us about wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day and a tangle of chargers and leads; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around West Brompton, a small back bedroom or the box room often becomes the office. Home offices can make that room work, with the desk under the window or across an alcove. Cable routes are planned so they run neatly to the sockets, and any new sockets are for your electrician.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What happens on fitting day
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so home offices are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.
- You let us know how you work and where you’d like the office.
- At the design visit, the room is measured and the layout planned. Cable routes are planned at this point.
- The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows.
- The office is made in our workshop and painted in your colour.
- We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you. The cable routes are left ready to use.
Before we arrive
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
How to get a quote
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, get in touch through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Advice
Tips worth knowing
People planning fitted home offices often ask about these. They help whatever the room:
- List the equipment you use, from screens to printers
- Look at the window and where the light falls
- Decide how much should be open shelving and how much behind doors
- Consider your chair when planning the desk
Once the fitting is done, your office is ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Use a mat under a laptop or anything with rubber feet while the paint hardens.
Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If a door drops or a drawer catches, message us from the contact page and tell us.
What it costs
There is no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- The internal fittings
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Parking and unloading on your street
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Getting in touch
When you contact us, these help most:
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Where you live, with the postcode
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Home working in West Brompton: local notes
About 70% of the homes in the area around West Brompton went up before 1919, and about 12% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of West Brompton is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Hammersmith and Fulham included. Vans bringing furniture to West Brompton fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Cuthbert and St Matthias, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If your children go to St Cuthbert with St Matthias CofE Primary School or a school nearby, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework. For an older house near Church of St Luke, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
