About our alcove units in Woodford Bridge
Some alcoves suit a full-height unit, with doors from floor to ceiling. In a bedroom, it can become a small wardrobe or a linen cupboard. At the design visit we ask what you plan to keep there, and set out the shelves and rails around it. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about bare alcoves beside the fireplace and everyday clutter left on show.
A good part of the housing around Woodford Bridge is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, and that layout shapes where alcove units work best. Walls in houses of that age are normally straighter than in Victorian ones, though they’re still checked and scribed where needed.
The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set heights, so there is often wasted space overhead. We can take a bespoke unit to the ceiling or stop it at the picture rail, depending on the room. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can use the full height too.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.
Why choose us
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
- Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- Edges scribed to follow your walls
- Designed for the room you have
Before and after fitting day
People planning alcove units often ask about these. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:
- Think about what you’ll store before we meet
- Check whether there is a vent in the chimney breast
- Measure anything large that must fit inside, like a record player
- Move things out of the alcoves so we can measure properly
Keep any chimney vent clear once the units are in, even when the cupboards fill up. Ventilation helps keep the chimney breast dry.
Spread heavy loads and keep the heaviest things on lower shelves. Most sagging comes from shelves carrying more than they were planned for.
Built-in living-room furniture in Woodford Bridge
About 49% of the homes in the streets around Woodford Bridge went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how alcove units are fixed and fitted. There are 13 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Woodford Bridge. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Redbridge sets its own rules. If your street in Woodford Bridge is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. We ask about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Gwynne House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near Highams Park station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For families living near Roding Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

Materials and finishes
Moisture-resistant MDF
For alcove units, MDF gives crisp doors and smooth sides. The moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice next to a chimney breast.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even, factory-like surface. It works on simple doors and on more traditional ones.
Questions we are often asked
I live near Highams Park station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Do you make alcove units for homes in Woodford Bridge?
Yes, we work across Redbridge, Woodford Bridge included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.
How long will the fitting take?
The fitting depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll explain what to expect before we arrive.
Should both alcoves have the same units?
It’s up to you. Matching units give a balanced, formal look around the chimney breast, but you might want a desk on one side and cupboards on the other. We can keep the details the same so they still look like a pair.
How do I get started?
The first step is to drop us a line using the contact form and tell us about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
What happens on fitting day
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You get in touch and describe the alcoves you want to fill.
- At the design visit we measure each alcove at several heights, because period walls are rarely flat or square, then talk through the design with you.
- We send the design, materials and finish in a written quote.
- In our workshop the units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on the edges that meet the wall.
- On fitting day we level the units and scribe the edges so they follow the line of the plaster. Spray-painted units arrive finished; hand-painted ones are painted once fitted.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.
