Our fitted wardrobes across IG5

Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. It turns an awkward corner into storage. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes.

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind.
  2. We visit to measure the room and talk through the design.
  3. You receive a written quote setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers.

What goes into your quote

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Fitted wardrobes across IG5: local notes

In IG5, a spare room often doubles as a study or a guest room. Fitted wardrobes can be planned so the room switches between them, keeping clothes, bedding and everything else out of sight.

About 55% of the homes in the IG5 postcode district went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 18% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. About 55% of homes in IG5 date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. Terraced houses are home to about 34% of households in IG5, the 2021 Census shows. London terraces normally have a small back bedroom and alcoves in the main bedroom, which suit fitted furniture.

Our area covers the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City, IG5 included. Wherever you are, the job starts with a design visit.

Barkingside: If you live in a flat close to Seven Kings station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Valentines Mansion, about 1.2 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

Spraying in the workshop means the doors come to your home finished. Treat them gently while the paint cures fully.

Hanging rails

A long rail needs a support in the middle when it carries winter coats. We plan the rail lengths with that in mind.

What we don’t do

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Structural changes to the room
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist

When is bespoke worth it?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in IG5

Moving home often prompts it. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom, or will not go up the stairs at all. Fitted wardrobes are designed for the room you have now.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?

That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better, while hinged doors suit rooms with space to open them. We look at it with you when we measure.

What happens during the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Do you do plastering or decorating?

No. We don’t plaster or decorate, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.

Will you travel outside London?

No. We work in London and nowhere else.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

How do I get a quote?

The first step is to drop us a line using the contact form and let us know about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

Is it possible to have storage over the bed?

Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused. We measure the bed and the room during the design visit.
