Alcove units for your home in Hale End
How we make alcove units for Hale End
Few alcoves in older houses are truly square. The walls lean, the chimney breast may bow and the floor often slopes, often all at once. We make each unit in our workshop to the measurements we take, then scribe it on site, so the sides meet the wall closely rather than showing a dark line. Adjustable feet or a plinth set it level. If your home has tired cupboards in the alcoves and alcoves that aren’t square, alcove units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.
Around Hale End, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, which decides where alcove units sit. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.
You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Could you do it yourself?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
How fitting day works
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Alcove units arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.
- You send us a few details about the alcoves and what you’d like in them.
- We come to measure the alcoves, look at the walls and agree the design with you.
- We send a quote in writing for the units, for you to read through at your own pace.
- We make the cupboards and shelves in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, scribing them to the walls. Then we go through the doors and shelves with you.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
Starting with a design visit
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

How we price alcove units
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- The width and height of the space
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Doors and drawers, and how many
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
What we need to know
There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Examples of the look you’re after
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the design visit.
Caring for painted furniture
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Check whether there is a vent in the chimney breast
- Let us know about parking and access during the design visit
- Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
- Sort out damp patches before fitting
Doors can settle a little once the units are in use. Most hinges can be adjusted to line the doors up again, so a small gap or rub is easy to correct.
Use a mat under plants, vases and drinks. Dry any spills quickly.
Common questions about alcove units
Is Hale End in the area you cover for alcove units?
Yes, Hale End is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hale End?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do alcove units affect the chimney’s ventilation?
Any vent is kept clear in the design. Ventilation helps keep a capped chimney dry, which protects the units as well as the wall. Any existing damp should be dealt with before the units go in.
How do I get a quote for alcove units in Hale End?
Just get in touch through our contact form. It helps to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and we’ll arrange a design visit, followed by a written quote.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
Your electrician handles sockets and wiring. It’s best done before the units go in so the sockets line up with the design. We then plan cut-outs and cable gaps around them.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. For families living near Joseph Clarke School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. For an older house near All Saints Church of England Highams Park, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.
