Friday Hill Alcove Units

In Friday Hill, we design alcove units around the room you actually have. We design your alcove unit at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Worn or badly fitted alcove units
  • Storage that suits a period room
  • Toys and paperwork with no proper home

Alcove units for your home in Friday Hill

How we make alcove units for Friday Hill

Most Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses have a chimney breast in the main rooms, with an alcove on each side. Alcove units turn that space into cupboards and shelves that look as though they belong there. If your home in Friday Hill has alcoves like these, we design a unit for each one. If you’re living with worn or badly fitted alcove units and a place for a small desk, alcove units made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, so alcove units are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Friday Hill, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, for a smooth and even finish. It suits a crisp, modern look as well as a classic one.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home once the units are in. Small marks are easy to touch up, and it suits a period room.

Pricing alcove units in Friday Hill

There’s no set price, because there is no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • The internal fittings
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The overall size of the piece

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote.

What to send when you contact us

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it is useful to send:

  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • How you want to use the space
  • Approximate measurements of the space

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.

Living-room carpentry in Friday Hill: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 45% of the housing in the streets around Friday Hill, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Friday Hill. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Friday Hill (about 45%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, which shape where alcove units go.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Peter and St Paul, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. Close to The Highams Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Friday Hill House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Could you do it yourself?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Questions we’re often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Friday Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Can you make alcove units for a home in Friday Hill?

Yes, we work across Waltham Forest, Friday Hill included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.

What happens to the chimney vent when alcove units go in?

Any vent in the chimney breast is kept clear when we design the units. Even a blocked chimney needs some ventilation to help keep damp away and we design around it.

How do I get started?

The first step is to use our contact form and let us know about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Practical tips

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Check whether there’s a vent in the chimney breast
  • Think about what you will store before we meet
  • Talk to your electrician early if you want new sockets
  • Think about how the units meet the picture rail and cornice

Don’t let stored things block the chimney breast vent. Ventilation helps keep the chimney breast dry, which protects the units too.

Avoid placing a heater hard up against the units.

How fitting day works

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. It starts with a short message from you about the alcoves.
  2. At the design visit we measure up, agree the layout and talk about colour and finish. You can choose a spray-painted finish from our workshop or a hand-painted one done in your home.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish written in alongside the design and materials.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. If you chose spray painting, that is done in the workshop too, for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit the units in your home and scribe them to the walls.
  6. New paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat the surfaces gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Getting a quote

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
