Window seats in Yiewsley
Bay windows are common in period homes, and they make a natural place for a seat. Bays have angled sides, and their walls are seldom square or flat. We measure every face and scribe the seat to follow them, so the seat follows the bay exactly. It’s the kind of space where a ready-made bench never quite fits. People normally come to us about wanting a seat without blocking the radiator and unused space below a sash window, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
A good share of the homes around Yiewsley were built between 1945 and the early 1970s. Post-war homes normally have squarer rooms and fewer nooks than period ones, which means window seats can add storage that was never built in. Walls may be concrete, block or brick, so fixings are chosen for the wall.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Yiewsley homes and window seats
In the streets around Yiewsley, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 45%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 27%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Yiewsley include White Hart Public House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 40% of households in the streets around Yiewsley live in purpose-built flats, according to Census 2021. For a flat, window seats are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
For a flat near Southall station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your children go to Brookside Primary School or a school nearby, window seats can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. The wider area includes historic houses such as Northolt Manor, about 1.4 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
With a ready-made bench, the colour is the maker’s choice. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it sits with the skirting, the shutters or the walls. A room without alcoves gives ready-made furniture nothing to sit into, so it stands out from the wall, whereas fitted furniture can make its own recesses.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What it costs
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:
- Parking near your home
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- How square the room is
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.
Helping us understand the room
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you contact us, it helps to send:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Approximate measurements of the space
To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.
Flats, conversions and lettings
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them during the design visit.
Common questions about window seats
Can you make window seats for a home in Yiewsley?
Yes, Yiewsley is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hillingdon and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Yiewsley?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Is it possible to have a window seat above a radiator?
Yes. We build a grille or an open front into the seat so the heat is not trapped. We also leave space around the radiator. Moving the radiator is for your plumber, if you’d prefer it elsewhere.
Which materials go into your window seats?
Our window seats are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Next to a window, the moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.
How long is the fitting for a window seat?
How long fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The seat is built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We keep the room as tidy as we can while we work.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.
How fitting works for window seats
Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Drilling into concrete is noisier than into brick or plaster, so a word with the neighbours before fitting day can help. We work within any rules your building has on noise and hours. We tidy as we go.
- You get in touch with a few details about the window.
- We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the seat. Shutters and cills are noted too.
- Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. Read it through and ask if anything is unclear.
- Your window seat is made at our workshop, shaped to the window, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The seat is fitted and set level, ready for a cushion, with the lids or drawers checked with you.
Preparing the room
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
