Caring for painted furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Measure the route into the kitchen
  • Pick the oven, fridge and dishwasher first
  • Tell us about parking during the design visit
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first

The appliances you’ve chosen come with their own care instructions, and the worktop you chose will have its own care advice too.

Measure the route into the kitchen not just the room. We make the cabinets in sections that fit through the doors and up the stairs, so let us know about tight turns or small lifts.

Islands work well in kitchens with room to walk around them. There needs to be enough clear floor around it to open doors and move about, because a cramped island makes a kitchen harder to work in. If the room is narrow, we will suggest other layouts. We make kitchens from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are open shelves with cupboards below and cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls.

Wherever your home in Bromley sits in London’s mix of housing, a bespoke kitchen starts with measuring the room. The worktop, sink and appliances you choose are built into the design. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the kitchen we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Honest limits

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:

  • Knocking through or rebuilding walls
  • Making good walls and ceilings
  • Connecting a gas hob or cooker

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it is made from

  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Larders and dressers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Islands where space allows

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so let us know what’s near you during the design visit. If you live in a flat, any lift or building rules are worth checking too.

  1. You contact us about a bespoke kitchen.
  2. We visit to measure and talk through the layout and the finish, spray-painted or hand-painted.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish agreed.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied on site and is easy to touch up later.
  6. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician; new paintwork needs gentle use while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

How to get a quote

To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Made-to-measure kitchens in Bromley

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Bromley were built before 1919 (about 37%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 6 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Bromley. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and the rest of London sets its own rules. Where a street in Bromley is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Let us know about parking during the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses like Bromley Palace, about 0.3 miles east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. If you live in a flat close to Bromley South station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Near listed buildings like Church of St Peter and St Paul, under half a mile north of the centre of Bromley, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Bromley is part of the London Borough of Bromley, about 4 miles east of Orpington. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Bromley is part of that. We cover places right across the rest of London, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

We work across BR2, BR1, BR6 and BR5. We cover homes on streets like High Street, Church Road and St Paul's Square, whether you want bespoke kitchens or another piece made for the room. Main roads around Bromley include the A222 and A223. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. If you’re just outside Bromley, we also cover Sundridge (1 mile north-east), Plaistow (1 mile north), Bickley (1 mile east), Widmore (1 mile east) and Downham (2 miles north). Other parts of the rest of London we cover include Orpington (4 miles east), Beckenham (2 miles west), St Mary Cray (4 miles east), Chislehurst (2 miles north-east), Penge (3 miles west) and Anerley (4 miles west).

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Bromley

Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in Bromley?

Yes, Bromley is within the area we cover, which takes in all of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in Bromley?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How long will the kitchen take to fit?

It depends on the kitchen. The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you can plan your other trades around it.

How much does a bespoke kitchen cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, layout and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Can you fit a kitchen in a room with uneven walls?

Yes, it’s something we deal with all the time. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so every cabinet is scribed and levelled.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
