Bespoke kitchens for homes in Barnehurst

You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and we design the cabinets around them. We plan each space around the appliances you have chosen, so everything fits as it should. Your quote sets out the materials and finish. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are an island where space allows and extra cupboard space.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Barnehurst, many kitchens have a garden door and a window that shape the layout. Cabinets, a larder and a dresser can be made to suit the layout. The worktop, sink and appliances you choose are built in.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Barnehurst?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Barnehurst?

Yes, we work across Bexley, Barnehurst included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route as well as the room. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.

What materials do you use for kitchens?

Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. We spray paint in the workshop or hand paint, in colours agreed with you.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

How we price bespoke kitchens

The price for your room depends on:

  • The width and height of the space
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.

Getting in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Approximate measurements of the space

It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Barnehurst homes and bespoke kitchens

About 40% of the homes in the area around Barnehurst went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 31% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Barnehurst include Parish Church of St Paulinus (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south-east, and One Bell Public House (Grade II), about 0.6 miles south-east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 40% of homes in the area around Barnehurst date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many houses of that era have had the kitchen extended or knocked through, so the kitchen is designed for the room as it is now.

If your children go to Mayplace Primary School or a school nearby, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off. For a flat near Barnehurst station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. The wider area includes historic houses like Hall Place and Gardens, about 1 mile south-west. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

Barnehurst is part of the London Borough of Bexley, about 3 miles south-west of Sidcup. From period terraces to newer flats in Barnehurst, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. We list Barnehurst among 27 places we cover in Bexley.

Materials and finishes

Larder and dresser units

We build larders with shelves, drawers and door racks, sized to what you store.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF suits kitchens, because it copes with a room that gets warm and steamy.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the kitchen. Say a little about the way you cook.
  2. We visit, measure and go through the layout, larder, dresser or island.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you, setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home, with plumbing, gas and electrics by your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician. It helps to have those trades booked in good time.
